not sure about this; I know I have a retroverted uterus which means it tilts backwards, apparently it went like that after I had dd. But they tell me it is nothing to worry about.Surely your GP can tell you what this term means ?

Hi issywoo, there was a thread here recently. I know it is about childbirth but there is alot of info about a bicornuate uterus. Perhaps if no one answers on this thread you can click on the 'contact another talker' link at the top of the thread to ask for advice/info.

Good luck!

A bicornuate uterus is one that is 'heartshaped'. It can cause the baby to lie in a breech position and sometimes preterm labour. I am sure many women have a bicornuate uterus and don't know it. Check out pie's link for other points of discussion. Don't get too anxious about it.

hiya issywoo
hope you have looked on the other threads as you will see messages I have posted previously.I am now pregnant and am coming up to 6 weeks with (hopefully) my second baby.
Yesterday I had a little spot bleeding and it's had me worried although fingers crossed today nothing.
If you want to contact me to "talk" then please do using the service at the top of the page

Good luck

I too have a bi-corunate uterus - this had two effects on my pregnancy - firstly only one half of my uterus worked out I was pregnant so I had some worrying bleeding at about six weeks as the other half thought about having a period. Secondly it meant that ds lay transverse with his back acorss the exit during the majority of the pregnancy as there was not enough room to change position. He was therefore born by c-section (back first not being an option and also he'd pushed my kidney (which is in the wrong place) across the hole in the pelvis so that it acted as a very nice backrest, but also a further obstacle to normal delivery).

I was taken into the hospital at 38 weeks as there was a concern that if my waters broke at the start of labour the chord may be washed out (as his head was not blocking the way) and this could be serious for him - a c-section was planned for the 39th week. They did break 2 days later but there was no problem with the chord, just getting dp to the hospital in time for the birth

Other than what I've described above, and a slightly odd shapen bump through the pregnancy (plus frequent kicks at my right ribs trying to pursuade me to make more room), I had no problems (indeed I was very healthy throughout - no morning sickness and worked to within a week of the birth) and ds is as healthy and beautiful as I could dream of.

My uterus is very heart shaped however, and so my experience may not necessarily be your future - I was told when it was first discovered that many such uteruses smooth out during the pregnancy - so please don't worry it may not have any implications on the pregnancy, and even if it does it need not mean that there will be any ill effect on your child.

janeway

great too hear a real positive..thanks
like you say hopefully my spot-bleed will be just from one half of my uterus as there has been nothing today(fingers crossed).when my waters broke last time they did it on two separate occasions due to the heart shape.
still waiting for "official" cofirmation from the gps urine sample(nearly a week later and still no result) but feel a little better this evening.
Until I get the result then no onward chain with midwives/scans etc

Thanks for all your reassuring messages.
i went for a scan 2 weeks ago when i thought i was 6 weeks (i was having a lot of pain) and thats when they detected the bi-cornuate uterus. they couldn't find a heart beat and thought i was only 5 weeks gone. so i went again last week and they still can't find a heartbeat and still think i'm less than 6 weeks so i have to go again tomorrow. i don't understand why the dates are so wrong as i know when i had my last period and when i ovulated.
i already have a 2 year old daughter who was born by c-section after an unsucessful induction 2 weeks overdue. she weighed 8 and a half pounds so it doesn't seem like it caused any problems with her. so i'll try to relax - thanks everyone.
chatee - i'll try and contact you but i'm not very good at technical things!
