I'm in the process of buying baby bottles - any advice would be much appreciated. Been looking at Tommy Tippee and Avent. Are they any good?
Thank you in advance.

i use the tommy tippee as u can combine breast and bottle feeding really well,(did with DD1) a friend use avent and say they leak alot, also tommy tippee are on offer in ASDA 6 bottles for £10 which is fab- the closer to nature 1's, also the breast pump is too. the offer will be finishing soon though,

if your thinking about using dummies then they also now do the closer to nature dummies too

i used Avent but had to change to doctor brown as they werent that good for controlling colic! i wish i would of been told about doctor browns (they are fantastic) before i wasted my money on avent which as harley says leak a lot.

i have used tommee tippee with my two, and planning for #3 (for expressed breast milk or formula if i have to) after trying quite a few with my first, ive found they are good for colic, as the valve thingy in the teats are really good for preventing a backlog of air in the bottle, they dont leak, and are really good for combining with breastfeeding, my lot have always been happy to go between the two

(i tried avent, they leaked a lot on me, and tescos own were useless and there was always loads of bubbles in the bottle, tried another and that wasnt good either, but cant remember what it was, borrow from a friend to try it out but my lil one didnt like it)

none...

ktwiltshire · 22/05/2010 03:02

^ bottles are still useful if you want to breastfeed, like when you express milk off and get DP/DH to feed the baby etc

I had Avent for DS and they leaked something wicked! For my nephew they use Closer To Nature ones and I much prefer them, that is what I will be buying when this one is born.

I bottle fed DD from the start and used Avent bottles and never had any problems at all, thought they were brilliant and will be using them again this time (when I get them out of the loft). No idea about the Tommy ones but my best mate went for the cheap option and used mothercare own brand and they were so rubbish that 2 weeks later she binned them and bought Avent ones.

I breastfed but had bottles for expressed feeds, I used Tommee tippee majority of the time and they were great, they do tend to have good deals and offers on at most of the supermarkets and the teats are easy to get hold of when you need to change flow.
But I did have a NUK one for the earlier days, just a small one as someone had told me that the teat was closest to mother nature (?!?) anyway DS was fine with both of those.

Don't buy too many now and see which brand suits your baby best when s/he arrives - different brands seem to suit different babies. Both Avent and TT are good.

cinnamongreyhound · 22/05/2010 16:11

I used avent but mainly because I breastfed and was recommended the avent breast pump, which I got on really well with. I did try the tommee tippee pump but it really hurt my nipples. I suppose you could express into something and then transfer it if you find your baby gets on better with the other type. My friend used Dr. Browns with her first as they are supposed to be very good for colic as addictedtolatte said and it really helped her little girl but she said they were a pain to wash and sterilse because all of the different parts.

Claire236 · 22/05/2010 16:55

Tommee Tippee or NUK. ds1 was prem & couldn't drink out of Avent which a mw told me was quite common & recommended NUK which he had no prob with. I really like the little pots for formula which fir inside Tommee Tippee bottles. Really handy when you're out.

moonstorm · 22/05/2010 18:36

Ok I should expand! I don't think you need to buy bottles until after the baby has arrived (unless you know you'll ff) and you have a clearer idea of what you want them for.

For example if you bf, you might want to buy those with teats that imitate the breast. You might not actually get on with pumping and therefore never use them (as sort of happened to me). If you decide to formula feed you might look into different types. You may or may not want anti colic ones etc.

I bouhgt a selection before ds arrived and I could have saved my money. He was prem, so in the early days I fed him expressed milk with a cup. Later I didn't get on with expressing (I just never found the time), by the time I got round to expressing again I just put the milk straight into a tomme tippee cup.

So I would again say 'none'! My advice would be would be just to wait until after the birth when you have a more exact ideas what you want them for and how many you want. Then if you never use them you haven't wasted money, but you haven't lost out by waiting.

Ditto addictedtolatte - I spent a fair amount on Avent and then did it all again on Dr Browns. Would always recommend Dr Browns

Rockbird · 25/05/2010 11:55

Tommee Tippee by a mile. I never succeeded at bf but DD still preferred these despite their breast shape. We tried Avent and Dr Brown and she hated them.

Liskey · 25/05/2010 11:58

We tried all sorts of bottles but found the best ones were the Dr Browns ones as they really helped DD colic - they were recommended by my HV one of the few bits of good advice!

LuluF · 25/05/2010 13:24

I use Tommee Tippee. I like the shape. I have breastfed mine, but there are times when you want to bottle feed and the shape seems more natural for them, I think.
