Weight loss in pregnancy

I'm 12 weeks pregnant and have been losing weight. I was around 10 stone before becoming pg but am now 1/2 stone lighter and am a bit concerned because literature seems to say that I should put on at least a few pounds in the first three months. I didn't suffer from morning sickness, although I was nauseous which affected my appetite a bit. However, I made a point of making sure I ate as well as I could and over the past week especially have ben eating a mountain of food! I started getting a 'bump' quite early on and have also gone up a couple of bra sizes so I think I should be a bit heavier than I am. First pg so I'm a bit neurotic! Does anybody have any advice/ reassuring info?

I lost weight in first 4 months with both of mine due to nausea and appetite change. I also found I couldnt eat anything fatty so thats most probably why I lost weight. I went on to have dd 7lb5oz and ds 8lb3oz so I am positive your baby is growing ok.

Most of the literature I have read says its quite normal to lose weight in the first trimester!!!! Sometimes you should just throw those books in the bin.

Since I have got pregnant I have lost about 40lbs. I've been hospitalised for being so sick and even though I'm 6 months pregnant all my clothes still fit, infact they are too big. But the baby is growing great. If you are really worried then talk to your doctor, but for what its worth I think you will be fine!!

Thanks for your advice! The best piece of advice was to throw the books away. I think I'm addicted to them though, as every twinge or different feeling and I'm looking them up. As you say, they all have different information but no doubt I'll keep looking things up in five different books and getting worked up about them! Most of my waistbands don't fit anymore, despite me losing the weight so at least I'm not too worried about baby's growth (well no more than normal!)

I too lost weight in the first 3 or 4 months of being pregnant. I was being sick every day. I did eat but probably not as much as I could have, due to nausea.

I lost 7 kg in the first trimester, but regained it all slowly (and then some) over the next two trimesters. My gp said you can be literally starving before your baby suffers - it will get what it needs from your supplies, that it is you who needs to make sure you are getting enough vitamins and minerals etc. Bit confused in writing, hope you get my drift, ds has learnt how to thump the keyboard to watch my reaction...

I threw up 3-4x/day with my 2nd pregnancy, and only lost about 6 lbs/week by 13 weeks. Which is pretty good if you think about it. I started out skinny, too. I have a slender friend who weighed about 5 lbs less than her usual weight at end of her pregnancy (8.5 months. She was nauseaus the whole way thru. She did deliver 3 wks early... but the baby was ok, just small.

The midwife told me that the fetus gets most of its nutrition from hormones (progresterone??) in the first 13-14 weeks, and only extra concern was to make sure I got down some folic acid each day

In my 1st pregnancy I had to buy maternity trousers at 8 weeks, lost at least 1/2 a stone in the first trimester, and didn't change boob size at all. My boobs didn't grow until after the milk came in.
2nd time round I didn't need maternity trousers until 10/11 weeks, stayed at my pre-pregnancy weight until nearly 1/2 way through, and didn't change boob size at all - and again my boobs didn't grow until after the milk came in.

Don't worry, enjoy the pregnancy, and enjoy the books (just remember that they're written for the 'average woman' and that you are not 'average' - you're YOU).
