Morning Sickness / Sickness Generally.....

I am having pregnancy sickness from hell today. 14 1/2 weeks through and I was expecting that it should be getting better now not worse.

I have thrown up no less than 5 times and am feeling so rubbish and washed out. Usually I feel ill in the morning but as soon as I eat I am fine. I have had one other pregnancy, which was a breeze, and from what I understand it can be worse with the second one.

Does anyone have any suggestions as to how to get through the rest of the day(s) that I have this problem.

I've had awful sickness with all of my pregnancies. Nothing helped me, but people swear by ginger biscuits and those sea sickness bands. I'd also suggest perhaps a zinc suppliment(unless its already in any pregnancy vits you may be taking) as zinc deficiency can cause sickness and is common in pregnancy. And rest. Put your feet up and rest as much as possible.

Try some travel sickness bands. I'm sooooo glad i got mine. I nearly didn't because they were £8 (I know I'm stingy) and i didn't think they would work - but they do!!!!
The sickness didn't go away but it was so much better when the bands were on.

1.Stop taking folic acid, if you are still taking it. It makes sickness worse and you don't need it after the first trimester.
2.Keep eating - don't go more than an hour without something small to eat. Give up on main meals and just snack throughout the day. Eat whatever you feel like you will be able to manage.
3.Keep drinking - small sips frequently. The biggest danger with constantly being sick is dehydration.
4.If this goes on for weeks and weeks on end, see your GP about getting a prescription for anti-emetics.
5.Take time off work if you need to as stress and tiredness makes it much, much worse.
I hope it gets better for you soon.

If you're struggling to keep water down, try drinking something else. I'm finding juice (preferably Apple & Mango, but Apple is fine) is going down and staying down far better.

Ali I totally sympathise with you!
I'm 15 weeks pregnant and I still get sick now and again ;(
I've noticed that I have to eat something every 2 hours even though I'm not hungry, if I dont I feel sick.

I thought morning sickness was going to disappear after week 12...although I must admit I feel much better than 4/5 weeks ago ;)

My sickness life savers have been:

Lucozade/fizzy water/lemonade
ice pops
crackers, sometimes with cheese
bagels/sandwiches
soft mints
orange juice
cereal
dried apricots

I've lived off these for weeks now! Plus, I've been using the bands, which helped a bit!

Ali - I gave up at 12 weeks and went to the doctor where upon he prescriped Cyclazine. I don't take it every day but I do take it on the particularly bad days.

I'm 31+4 and puked yet again yesterday (in the street )...

You also have free license to stamp on the toes of anyone who suggests ginger as though it's a miracle cure and you'll never have heard of it before.

Jacksmybaby · 24/05/2010 09:04

at ginger comment!
I'm on cyclizine too, it has really helped.

AliGrylls · 24/05/2010 10:44

I don't think it's bad enough to warrant cyclizine. Last two days seem to have been better, although had occasional vomit.

I had a small glass of wine on Thurs evening when friends came over and actually I know it sounds weird but I am blaming it on that. It gave me such wicked heartburn.

Thank you skihorse. May I also stamp on the toes of people who suggest jellybeans?

Glad you are feeling a bit better AG. Hope it continues that way!

skihorse · 24/05/2010 11:27

Ali - of course, you're also allowed to give chinese burns to anyone who suggests you eat a cracker before getting out of bed!

AliGrylls · 24/05/2010 19:34

Oh skihorse, how I wish it were true.
