Painful coccyx - help!

Dear all

I really hope you can help me out. I'm currently 27 weeks and in the last day or two I've been getting a really really painful coccyx when I've been sitting down for any period of time - even on a soft chair. I had this briefly at about 15 weeks but only when I'd been on a hard chair. It's so bad this time that it takes my breath away when I stand up, and I've become the stereotypical huffing, puffing and groaning pregnant woman! Has anyone else experience this - does it get better or worse? Anything that can relieve the pain? Anything I could have done to cause it?

Thanks so much
Jessie

is it specifically your coccyx or could it be your hips? possibly SPD/PGP??

its probably worth a call to your midwife and they can refer you to the physio to see if theres anything you can do/not do to help

try paracetamol for the mean time, i know it doesnt really help at all, but its worth a try. heat patches or a hot water bottle to relieve inflammation (as you cant take ibuprofen)? a nice warm bath could help

i had this 6 months after dc2 was born - it was as painful as you describe!! luckily i work in the physio dept and had gone back when dc2 was about 8 months and one fo my colleagues treated it with ultrasound. she just put the ultrasound head right at the top of the crack of my bottom cheeks and it cured the pain in a few treatments.

speak to the midwife about it but they can always have you referred as an urgent to your local physios!

Thank you. Yes it is very specifically my coccyx - I've had no other pain or mobility issues anywhere else which makes me thing it isn't SPD. I'm seeing the midwife next week so I'll speak to her about it then. I just hope I don't have to put up with this for another three months! I'll definitely go for the warm bath idea - DH is away on a stag do so that's my evening sorted!
Thanks x

I was suffering the same a couple of months or so ago. Really felt like an old crock when trying to stand up. Took ages to get my hips underneath me to get standing straight. I didn't mention it to the MW but when she was feeling my bump she said I bet you're having backache. It was the direction the baby was lying in - pushing against my spine. She has since turned around (the baby, not the MW)and is head down and the pain has eased a lot.
Am 33 weeks now and feeling much better.

negrilbaby that's really interesting - coule well be an issue as it's come on suddenly so that would explain it. Come on baby, move!

Definately worth mentioning to the mid wife I would say. Not wanting to cause panic or alaram, but my Mum has a particularly curved spine with the result that her coccyx is tilted in further thenn most and gets in the way with preganancy and birth. My Mum's Coccyx actualy dislocates in birth so she has suffered afterwards (but obviously thought it worth it - she's got 6 children!). It wasn't diagnosed until number 3 or 4 I thik so for at least the first two of us she thought she was being a real wuss not being able to sit down or move so well after the birth. At least if you find there is an issue you'll know what it is and can be prepared. If the pain continues, I remember my Mum having a special round cusion with a whole in it so she could sit without putting weight on her Coccyx.

I had this, I have SPD alos but this is right in my bum crease. Only thing that helps is sitting on the loo, or getting on all fours and spreading legs abit. You can get cishions to sit on with a V cut out , I find the softer the seat the worse it can be, but I do get it at night alot.

Thanks - no one's causing alarm, it's just good to know that other people have experienced it and there are numerous potential reasons. I'll let you know what my midwife says (and maybe get myself one of those cushions in the meantime!)
Thanks again
