Has anyone been told the wrong gender...

When the sonographer seemed really sure??

I had a scan at babybond and was told I am having a girl... (yay!) we were shown the three lines, and got given a picture...

I asked about four times if she was sure, and even asked if I went out and bought a pink pram (I didn't!) would I maybe be wasting my money. She said do it, buy pink things!

The problem is, every single person keeps telling me stories of how so and so's scan was wrong and it's freaking me out :p

do you think it can be wrong when she seemed so sure?
Is it usually this way round? Think it's a girl and turns out to be a boy or vice versa?

Any opinions would be very happily recieved as I am driving myself crazy!! X

yep, had a Babybond scan, and they were pretty sure I was having boy/girl twins, but weren't 100% sure about the girl. I went back for a second scan to check again and they confirmed definately a girl and a boy. I had two boys.

LittleBeth53 · 20/05/2010 06:58

I was! I had a scan at 16 weeks & the sonographer said it was a girl & said there was what looked like a little 'hamburger' between the babies legs.

I'm 22 weeks now & I've just had another scan & this time I was told it's a boy. I had a different sonographer this time who said that she had no idea what the first sonographer had been seeing & told me there's what looks like tiny little marbles between the legs, which means boy. My un-trained eye couldn't spot anything though both times so I've had to take the last sonographers word for it.

I'm booked into a private clinic to have another scan this coming sunday to double check. At £90 it's pricey, but I think worth it, because now I've got my head around the idea that I'm having a little boy, if I was to be told again that's it's actually a girl, I think I'd be very upset & miss my 'son.' A case of missing what you never had.

I'm definitely going for the double check.

i asked the gender with all 3 children, havent quite yet had DD3, but DD1 and DD2 were confirmed girls, and are girls.

i dont know anyone directly whos had the gender wrong, but i know of a few people in a kind of friend of a friend of a friend story way. it does happen, its not 100% accurate no matter how good the scan (2d or 3/4d), although the accuracy is obviously better with a 3/4d if you go to see the gender much later on in the pregnancy, but theres never any gaurentee

splatt · 20/05/2010 08:10

I've seen the reaction of 2 couples told girls and out came boys. Sorry.

They're usually accurate but nothing is ever 100% certain. Thus I've decided I'm going to wait for the surprise.

ps - on both occasions they were told girls and got a boy

Stickhasgrownup · 20/05/2010 11:57

I know one person who was told boy and had a girl in the end... so goodness knows what they thought they saw!

tablefor3 · 20/05/2010 12:13

Yep - friend of mine was told a girl at (I think) 20 week scan. At subsequent scan was told it was a boy. Was a boy. Good job they needed another scan for something unrelated....

Apparently at the scan when they were told it was a girl, they should also have been told that at that stage it was an 80% chance of being a girl, but sonographer didn't mention that . With boys, so I am told, it should be 100% accuracy.

However, some scans, maybe later on, not sure, then you can definitely tell. A colleague of mine told me that the sonographer for his DD's scan was pointing out her genitals on screen, so yup, pretty positive about that one.

pixiestix · 20/05/2010 13:06

LittleBeth - thats exactly why I am having a surprise! At this stage I don't mind at all what I have, but I know that if I found out at the scan that it was a boy, for example, and then on the day it turned out to be a girl I would be really bewildered and gutted. And vice-versa! I couldn't cope with the dashed expectations. So I am playing it safe and spending my pregnancy in ignorance!

cinnamongreyhound · 20/05/2010 14:41

I had a boy first time and sonographer said if he wasn't a boy she would give up her job! This time she actually showed us the boy bits and I am no expert but there was definately a penis and testicle shaped object there. Have heard its harder to see girls, I did work with a lady who was told she was having a second girl and it was a boy but she's the only person I know.

Here's my scan picture if anyone wants to give me any reassurance either way :p

Yes, we had 2 sonographers at 20w scan said it was a girl, when it was ds2. But IME sonographers never say they are absolutely sure for just this reason. Most of the time they're right, but not all the time. Ultrasounds aren't 100% on anything.

Couldn't get link to work

megonthemoon · 20/05/2010 14:57

We were told yesterday at anomaly scan that she was about 90% certain it was a girl - as she saw the three lines which represent the vulva. Anyone know if the errors were because they just hadn't seen a penis, rather than because they had seen a vulva, as I guess the former is more error-prone as a method of saying it's a girl than the latter IYSWIM? She said that she can never be certain with a girl, but that this was one of her more certain ones I'm actually nearly 24 weeks (scan late for some reason) so I sort of assumed it becomes more obvious as the baby gets bigger.

Hope we're not one of the errors, because we have a DS already and DH is absolutely thrilled at the prospect of having one of each

anythingwithagiraffeonit · 20/05/2010 14:57

oops... i'll try again :p

Over the years I've worked on a variety of pregnancy and birth TV programmes (Discovery and Living type stuff) And I've filmed this happen twice.
One lady had 2 grown up boys and had desperately wanted a girl, was told it was a girl had bought ONLY girls things (rather foolishly) and at the birth midwife said "OH look what we've got!" So the little fella had to spend his first few hours in a pink vest and babygro before husband could go get something a little less gender specific!

On the whole, they say if you are told its a boy the chances are its a boy as there is an extra bit iykwim, but if they say its a girl, that extra bit can be hiding or tucked away.

I've been told this baby is a girl, but I wont be rushing out to buy lots of girly things, or throwing away my boys things until I hold my baby in my arms and have a look myself!

lilsteel1 · 20/05/2010 15:15

scan on wednesday and out of 4 friends all due within a month... me being last there are 2 boy and 1 unknown maybe i will have the girl but at the end of 40 weeks i will be happy with a healthy baby girl or boy

oopsandbabycoconut · 20/05/2010 15:16

We found out at the 20 week scan we were having a DD2 the sonographer said he would eat his hat if she wasn't a girl. I have had to have a number of other scans and we were given a 4d scan voucher as a gift. All toher times they have said very clearly a girl and I only really believed it when we saw it in 3-d. At 37 weeks the view of the vulva was very different to the 3 lines we saw at 20 weeks. DD1 was a flasher and she showed us exactly what she had at 20 weeks again no chance she could ever have been a boy.

Shaz10 · 20/05/2010 15:17

I got shown the boy's bits at the 20 week scan, he was giving us a great flash so there was no query. I had more scans at 32 and 36 weeks, and asked again "is he still a boy?" and got told yes. When they took him out I said "is he still a boy" and yes he was.

As sure as we all were were - and it was very clear on that 20 week scan! - I never counted on it 100% and didn't buy a single blue/boy thing or decide on a name until I saw him for myself.

RibenaBerry · 20/05/2010 15:24

I just posted on another thread about a friend that this happened to. Told girl, got boy!

turkeyboots · 20/05/2010 15:26

With DD we were told she was a he. Thankfully I have no issues about putting baby girls in blue sleepsuits as that was all we had!

DS was correctly identified though, and we spotted the sex before sonographer pointed it out! But both items we had a boy and girl name, just in case.

turkeyboots · 20/05/2010 15:27

Both times, not items!
