Does anyone know what could have triggered a fit during pregnancy?

Not for me I hasten to add.

BF's 19yr old DD today collapsed and had a fit while picking her younger DD up from school. My BF was in court (jury service) at the time so her DH picked the DD up from the school and took her to the Drs. Who checked her over and everything seemed fine by that point.

BF got home and asked her straight out "are you PG".......and she said yes. Turns out she's 19 weeks pg!!!

Anyhow, the DD has no history of fitting and my BF is (naturally) quite worried about why it happened.........can anyone shed any light??

it could possibly be preeclampsia, or to be more exact, an eclamptic fit, but it would be highly unusual not to mention rare for it to happen so early in pregnancy. other than that im not sure what to suggest, cant think of anything else pregnancy related that would cause it off the top of my head, but someone might come along with a better answer!

i take it the DD is going to be investigated for this, they will most likely do test etc to work out why she fitted. hopefully they will investigate it properly, as even if she wasnt pregnant they would need to find out the cause of the fit. one would assume that the DDs GP knows shes pregnant.

I have low blood pressure which presents with symptoms probably about 6/7 times in a year. In pregnancy your blood pressure usually drops further so for people with naturally low bp, it can complicate matters somewhat. For me, during pregnancy my symptoms are much, much more regular. Normally my symptoms begin with light-headedness, then leading to dizziness, fainting and vomiting. On rare occasions I have also had a minor fit though. (I say rare because it has only happened 3/4 times in over 15 years), but when it first happened the teachers who were with me at the time (I was 11 and at school), thought I was epileptic due to the nature of the fit. It might be something like that.

yes the DD's GP knows she's pregnant - she's already apparently been for a scan and has her second one next week!

the GP they saw this afternoon did say that if it were to happen again it should be an ambulance job so they can try and work out what was going on - as by the time she got to the GP's everything was fine.

Just thought I'd ask on here in case anyone has any pearls of wisdom/experience that I could relay onto my friend as she is (naturally) worried sick.

Not what she needed after a hellish day deliberating in the court room.

that's interesting 2plus2 (I x posts with you as you'll probably see from the timings of our post).

I'm just hoping for both of their sakes (well all 3 as the boyfriend - well fiance now) is very much around too, that it's nothing too serious - and doesn't happen again either!

It could be low blood pressure related. I used to have issues with my blood pressure crashing and when it happened I would faint and would sometimes have convulsions too - apparently it looked just like a grand-mal. Apparently my heart was reacting so hard to get my blood pressure up that the tachycardia was inducing the convulsions.

I have very similar thing to 2plus2 - low blood pressure, used to faint a lot when i was younger (in my teens). This gradually slowed down in early twenties, then came back with vengence now i'm pregnant!

I fainted and apparently fitted when i was 26 weeks. No faints since then, just regular dizziness. When i fitted at 26 wk, was blue-lighted to hospital, they were really worried it was eclampsia, turned out it wasn't but just low blood pressure. As your bf's dd is so young, and so early on, i'd imagine its low blood pressure, but i was told if it happens again, to dial 999, just incase.

They said so long as its not eclampsia, its harmless - just embarassing! (During my fit i managed to give the woman sitting next to me a black eye).

I think she's a bit early for eclampsia surely, plus she'd have other symptoms, so shouldn't worry.
