How are you planning to dress your newborns in the heat?

So it's going to be a hot summer. Has anyone thought about how to dress a newborn for the heat? And what about when you're out in the pram? I have a Bugaboo Bee with a very warm cocoon in it - do I have to remove it? God, I am so panicky about baby over-heating or getting sunburn!

Ooh good question, I am having baby around 1 August and have also ordered the bee+ with a cocoon. My understanding is that you can kind of roll down/clip down the cover on the cocoon so the baby isn't completely enveloped in it - is this right? My understanding about newborns is that they should wear one layer more than you are wearing, so if it is warm and you are just wearing a vest top and skirt or a summer dress, the baby should wear a vest and a short sleeve babygro?

DS lived in this sort of thing when he was a tiny baby.

Mtn - if it's baking hot, baby will only need one layer.

DS was born in Summer. Ideally have them wearing natural materials like cotton, wool or silk that's far more breathable for the skin than synthetics.

You can get thin long sleeved vests if you don't want your baby to have bare arms, which when it's very hot is probably safest.

SoLongAsItsHealthy, that's exactly what I'm worrying about! I'll have a newborn in August, and also have a Bee+...

Bee-wise, the cocoon does 'button down', as MtnBikeChikc says, so it doesn't always have to come up to their chins. It can be more like a 'blanket over the knee' type height (there are several different button down positions). But you can also zip the top half of the cocoon off completely, which leaves you with the comfy nest base, but no cover on top.

Clothes - I've got sleeveless/legless body suits and short sleeve vests, thinking I can then add layers as needed... first baby though, I'm just trying to make sensible guesses....Also worrying about exposing new born skin to sun at the same time, so keeping an eye out for thin cover ups rather than chunky baby cardies....

Glad I'm not the only one worrying though. I'm the only person I know praying for a cloudy summer.

You could always cover your baby with a light cotton sheet if to keep the sun off, (in place of a parasol)

Dd1 was tiny in a heatwave, she used to sleep in her nappy, with a thin cotton sheet on top.

Sheepskin buggy liners are great for hot or cold. Buggies and carseats are always sweaty, black and nylony.

100% cotton for everything.

Agree about long sleeve vests, dd1 lived in two that were given to us from Petit Bateau - they were really fine cotton, but washed really well, and hopefully will be used for the 3rd time by dc3 arriving in July.

In a short sleeved vest(with poppers). Nothing else and put a sleepsuit on if 'it' gets cold. A couple of rompers for photo calls, rompers being like a short sleeve vest but with a tiny bit more leg. I'll keep baby out of the sun completely by draping blankets and sheets over pram hoods and maybe if it's a really hot one buy a shade net. DC2 was a may 2006 baby and it was boiling hot. She landed up swaddled in a thin sheet or a piece of soft cotton jersey cut from a big T shirt. We had a fan on hand but never used it.

Thanks for the reassurance - I'm a bit sneaky posting in Pregnancy as my baby is actually already here but this is where I lived during the pregnancy and got such good advice! He's 13 weeks now and has worn nothing but sleepsuits so far. But I'm trying him in rompers to let the air move around his legs more and have found some cotton "shorties" - short-sleeves and legs which will hopefully work.

Just panicked because I hear this week is going to get hot. I'm paranoid about the sun anyway. Have got the Bee parasol but it's a bit of a pain tbh as every time you turn a corner you have to re-position it and it's not all that flexible. Also read you're not meant to use suncream on them. I must remember to buy him a hat...

He's lying on our bed now in just his nappy and vest and blissfully happy and gurgly. I'm tempted to keep him in here where it's cool and comfortable but I know I must brave the world this summer!

Thanks

DD1 was a May 06 baby too LooL00.

She lived in rompers similar to the link by Jareth.

The biggest scare I got was when dd was 8 weeks old we went away for a few days - not abroad by the way but the weather got very hot.

We were travelling to meet a friend of ours and got stuck in very bad traffic.

Our car didn't have Aircon just the normal fan thing to cool down and it was useless.

I was terrified dd was going to get dehydrated or heatstroke or something.

We got to the hotel and she was fine luckily just very hot but it is something to be aware of with a summer newborn.

LooL00 · 19/05/2010 13:22

Another problem with hot summer babies can be you getting dehydrated, when bf dc2 I once drank 12 pints of water in a day. So don't get stuck on long journeys without a lot to drink.

Just thought about summer hats and think I may have found another use for the multi purpose muslin
