I was getting this (I'm 25 weeks), but I got an occupaional health person at work to look at my posture, and it has been much better since he raised my computer monitor to eye level and told me I should consciously try and sit my back against the back of my chair (ie. no leaning forwards or hunching).

A friend of mine got really bad pelvic girdle pain late in pregnancy and said she wishes she'd spoken to her dr about it earlier - so probably worth mentioning it at your next MW appointment.

Hope you feel better soon!

mention it to your midwife, could be pelvic girdle pain, could be pregnancy twinges, but speaking from experience i wouldnt leave it too long before asking for help!! tell the midwife your symptoms and they will probably do a referral to physio, they can give you advise on how to minimise pain and maximise movement without making things worse.
good luck!

My sympathies to you, from one hip pain sufferer to another.

I'm 40+4 and mine ache alot and have taken to sitting on my gym ball as there's less pressure than when I'm on the sofa. My hips hurt the most when I'm in bed. I am developing a phobia about bedtime!
I didn't find it too much of a problem until I hit 38 weeks and have been suffering since. Midwife says it because of the loosening pelvis area and says there's not much I can do about it now. I do a few yoga stretches and pelvic rolls at least 3 times during the night, That's the only way I get some minor relief and catch a few winks. If it had happened earlier in the pregnancy, I would have taken advice and tried to get it sorted.

Good luck!

I never got mine sorted and it was horrible in bed -- used to wake up in pain a few times a night. If you can find some way of relieving it, do it! 40+ weeks of it is no joke.

thanks x Think i might

OUCH!!! I'm up every hour through the night 28+1 weeks. After about 5 hours I just get up as it's easier. Went to midwife today and she's refering me. Didn't think she'd take me seriously though so nice surprise. Good luck

Definitely get referred early for both physio and OT. Sitting in sofas is usually awful positions, posture wise - you might get some relief from a really good office chair or a ball.

When you say pain on your hips, do you mean on the sides or at the back?
Because I've had terrible pain in my "cheeks" area for the last two months (I'm 17 weeks). It is really painful when I sit and even worse when I stand up. Rolling over in bed can make me scream in pain.
And it's not muscular, it definitely feels like when you've had a fall and your bones are sore. I asked the midwife and she gave me the same explanation about the pelvis loosening, but I'm not convinced.

I found I had very sore hips in bed earlier on in my pregnancy (20 weeks onwards) but I bought a memory foam topper and the difference was fairly remarkable. I actually enjoy going to bed again now (apart from the insomnia at times)

waitingimpatiently · 26/05/2010 11:18

My hips were excruciating during the nigh a couple of weeks ago but I slept with 2 big pillows under my bent leg so my whole leg was parallel with the bed and that helped a million.

lovechoc · 26/05/2010 11:23

yes I've been having this more and more recently. I'm 33 weeks pg just now and some days are horrific. It seems to be worse when I'm tossing and turning in bed at night though - can't seem to get comfy.

lovechoc · 26/05/2010 11:28

I can sympathise with you OP!!! Try putting a pillow between your knees at night when lying on the one side. It does help a bit.

Bumperliouzzzzzz · 26/05/2010 12:14

Yep, mine have got bad in the last 2 weeks (am 23 weeks), exacerbated by walking (or any exertion really) and in bed.

I went to the physio, though it was just for a group class which was the quickest way to see her to start off with, and there was a picture of a body and it said to indicate where was painful - I asked if I should just colour the whole body in!

I am getting cramps in the night, pain from my hips down through my legs which I can't work out if it is muscular cramp or sciatic nerve. My coccyx aches and between my legs burns. I am sleeping with a pillow between my legs, but it doesn't help a lot. When I was at the physio yesterday I saw my midwife briefly and mentioned why I was there, waiting for my physio appointment, and she said to go to the GP for some strong pain killers, which I did today (she also signed me off work for a couple of days, I must just look thoroughly tired and fed up!) and have got some codine tablets. Am hoping that will help, even just to get a better nights sleep for a few days.

Don't know about your local PCT but where I am they have Physio Direct that you can self refer too. They are very good. Also recommend an osteopath if you can afford it (I can't which is why I went to the hospital physio).

It really sucks doesn't it? I hope it doesn't get worse for you but I would get seen to as soon as you can. The physio will give you some tips for sitting and sleeping etc.
