When are you supposed to get measured for nursing bras and where's the best place to go for a fitting?

Am 33 weeks, vaguely remember you have to get fitted for nursing bras at the end of your pregnancy sometime (will have no chance once the baby is here).

Does anyone know when the best time to get fitted is, and can anyone recommend somewhere good?

Have been measured a couple of times for normal bras in M and S but found them crap. Are John Lewis any better?

I used to do this as part of my job. IIRC it is best to go 4 weeks before you are due.

Thanks Fab, can you recommend anywhere?

I found that I had to go to a specialist underwear shop because most places just don't have any kind of selection of maternity bras. They were great, but even they just had to guess how big my boobs would get after the milk comes in. I recommend that wherever you go to get fitted that you only buy one and then try and struggle along again once the baby is actually born and they can measure the new you.
Good luck!

John Lewis were great for me

36 weeks iirc.

Don't got to M+S or Mothecare. I've had bad experiences with both - done much better myself and then ordered online!

I agree mothercare and Mand s are both truly awful. Bravissimo fab.

THanks, we have a bravissimo nearby so might try yhere.

john lewis good for smaller (as well as bigger) than DD - lots of brands. We also have the Daniel department stores here and I think they have a pretty good range.

I'd go and try and get some tips on how to check for fit yourself (I learnt a lot when my sister dragged me to Rigby and Peller. Bravissimo look hopeful as they have good online guides, but I've never been) and get a starting point for size.

Then, once your DC is born, order some bras online. Figleaves and Bravissimo both do free returns. With DD1 I ordered about a dozen bras - chose 3 or 4 styles and then got a range of sizes that I though possible. Out of those I kept the ones that fitted (2, IIRC) and sent the rest back. DH was very relieved as original invoice was going on £300

I'd be wary of shops that rely on a tape measure to fit you - especially if you're not a "normal" size (M&S had me at 36D - R&P gave me a 32F. It fitted a million times better and made me look like I'd lost a stone. M&S didn't even SELL a 32F at the time...)

I went to JL when about 39 weeks with DD. They sold me a bra that barely fitted then - and was about 2 sizes too small when my milk came in. Wish I'd been a bit more switched on at the time and not bought it!

I have been told to go two weeks after baby as this is whe you will fill up. I have a few bras around the size I am at the moment and a few bigger and will manage till then.

Thinking abut it you are not going to be out much in the first couple of weeks to really need a nursing bra well thats how I feel so I can wait till I can get fitted at the fuller size.

withorwithoutyou · 19/05/2010 08:51

I've got a few nursing bras from last time so guess I could wear those. I really can't see me getting time to get measured for one any time soon after the birth with 2 under 2 to look after and a c-s to recover from but the online thing might work.

Thanks.

Check they still have the support needed. They don't tend to do for another use.
