Stylish nursing chair?

Proper nursing chairs seem like orthopaedic shoes - comfy and frumpy. Are there any stylish options out there? Found this Eames-style rocking chair, do you think one will be actually comfortable spending hours in it breastfeeding?

Or perhaps I should just abandon the conceit...

I wouldn't bother getting a nursing chair really. I spent the first couple if weeks sitting on an upright dining chair, once I'd got the latch right I just make myself comfortable on the sofa with MN in easy reach...

Try getting an antique Victorian or Edwardian nursing chair on ebay. You could then have it upholstered/upholster yourself in a fabric of your choice. You can then keep it and make it a family heirloom. I agree the modern ones are frumpy and redundant after a few months.

I was thinking about a plain arm chair and ottoman from IKea - one with removable covers in white. That way it can be used in other rooms eventually and is comfy enough for middle of the night feeds! Would be interested to know if anyone else has done that.

I'd like a rocking chair, but can't find a nice one. Not a fan of the 'nursing' chairs...

ladylush · 17/05/2010 18:33

I fancied getting an antique chair and getting it upholstered but dd arrived early and I didn't have time. We bought a white chair from Ikea which isn't a rocking chair but has a kind of bounce to it so soothing for baby. I've dropped off myself in it a few times! You need a good cushion though otherwise you won't be in the right position for feeding - due to shape of chair.

I will be a lone yay voice on the nursing chair... TOTALLY agree they aren't the prettiest of things, and I spent many years buying things for aesthetic reasons (hence many pairs of shoes in the wardrobe not very suited to buggy pushing - I digress).

I loved with an aching heart the Eames rocker and contemplated one with a sheepskin cover , but then in John Lewis choosing the cot I thought I'd try a slidy monster (with footstool).... have to say it is THE MOST COMFORTABLE CHAIR I HAVE EVER SAT IN.... I spent many many a small hours of the morning breastfeeding DS in it, and did occasionally zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz too. Still use it every day for reading stories and he's 2 next week.

So, whilst I know what you're saying, and also repect those who say you don't need anything special, you can use the sofa with cushions etc etc, that is ALL TRUE, BUT I would recommend this beast all the way.

Good luck x

that's respect not repect .... doh

I've got am old (20's?) Lloyd Loom 'dressing table' chair in DS's bedroom and it's great - no arms, nice and low, good upright back, comfy sprung seat.. This one is the type - scroll down to 'small Lloyd Loom chair'. Cost my mum about £15 at a junk shop, I think - you do see them all over the place. Some are tarted up and cost £££s, but if you find one in a junk shop or charity shop, or maybe a large outdoors antique market, it shouldn't cost much at all.

ReshapeWhileDamp · 17/05/2010 20:04

Look! This one is what I have (mine is red). They're made of tightly-rolled paper over a wood frame and look like wicker, and can be painted. I notice that some on ebay are going for £60+ but as I say, you can get them much cheaper in junk shops.

Umnitsa · 17/05/2010 21:57

Thank you for your advice!

Jollster - ahh, you are a woman after my own heart, Eames with a sheepskin sounds just right... at least for a photo shoot in my imaginary nursery, perhaps not so much in real life... Actually it's a good idea to go to John Lewis and test some of those chairs - ultimately, comfort and common sense may triumph over my style pretensions aspirations...

Sootysmummy, Ladylush, Reshape -good recommendations re checking antique nursing chairs. I had a look on ebay the other day, and there were quite a few of those low seat / high back Victorian and Edwardian armchairs. I did not realise they were actually comfortable and still fit for nursing: I am tall so look with suspicion at antique pieces obviously designed for someone ten inches lower. Have quite a few art deco wardrobes / cabinets but have avoided sofas and chairs because of that.

One thing to think about is whether you want one with or without arms. Some people love them, but others (ie me) couldn't get on with them...

ladylush · 18/05/2010 16:41

The one I've got from Ikea is called Poang

belle78 · 29/07/2010 11:09

Just had to share this - just read on Chic Little Baby blog about a new line of stylish nursing chairs. They look gorgeous, a little on the pricey side, but I want I want!

Lloyd Loom chairs on ebay
here's one

I had same issue. I wanted a chair that I could nurse my babies in, then put in my library (when the lottery machine finally starts working and comes up with our numbers!)in years to come to snuggle up and read in, complete with happy memories of my DC. I got really lucky and found this one on ebay from Pottery Barn for £100. Very lucky indeed as Pottery Barn don't sell in UK and cost £££ (or rather $$$) in the first place. God knows how the woman I bought it from got it to UK but very glad she did, and even happier she didn't want it any more as I love it and can't wait to snuggle up with my DC in it (four weeks to go!)

Chelle1986 · 29/07/2010 13:29

I've just been to Ikea and bought a Poang chair and a cheap cream footstool for my nursery. They are so comfy!! Plus it only cost me £70. When the baby doesn't want/need it in there room anymore I can easily move it in to the living room or our bedroom.

All the proper nursing chairs seemed really expensive for what they were. And this one is so comfy I had a quick nap in it after I'd put it up!

aggiej · 29/07/2010 14:48

oooh LOVE the Olli Ella chairs!

vmcd28 · 29/07/2010 15:32

can I ask a related question...? I didnt have a nursing chair with DS1 but want everything this time round
BUT I know that I will doze off during the night feeds - I am so used to getting lots of sleep now...

ANYWAY, is it SAFE to fall asleep while feeding? I just worry that they go on about not falling asleep on the settee with baby, but then sell you the comfiest seats that were ever invented to feed them in!

KFW · 29/07/2010 15:49

Um aggiej thank you for the tip about olli ella. I hadnt seen those before. They are ace! I have just emailed the link to DH. Waiting to hear the explosion go off in his office a couple of miles away when he sees how much they are. It was he who said that he didnt like the mamas and papas one cos it's ugly though, so I'm looking forward to seeing him wriggle out of this one

aggiej · 29/07/2010 16:13

KFW no problem! My pitch to DH as to why we must have an Olli Ella is because it can also double as a chair for him to watch footy in (I want it for the living room) ;)
