Anyone diagnosed with thyrotoxicosis or Graves disease during pregnancy? Interested to hear other people's experiences- treatment, how was the baby? etc.

I haven't been, but my Mum was when she was pregnant with me. This is 31 years ago mind! She had an operation to remove part of her thyroid whilst 8 mths pregnant (I think the other option was to take drugs for it). I'm not sure what the treatments are these days though.

I just thought I'd post though to say that as far as the baby was concerned (i.e. me!) I've never had any problems, no health issues, everything's good with me. Hope someone comes along soon who can give you a more "up to date" experience.

Thanks EggsandBacon. It's reassuring to learn that even in a situation where your mum had to have part of her thyroid removed when she was 8 months pregnant, everything turned out fine.

I'm on a drug called PTU, which is working fine so far. Had baby's 20 week scan today and he looks great!!

Titilola

I am currently 40 weeks and have Hyperthyroid, I was on 450mg PTU to start and they lowered my does at each clinic appointment (every 4 weeks) until I stopped completely at 36 weeks. I had growth scans at 28,32 and 36weeks to check baby was not too small and she is fine. Apparently any complications are very rare. Post delivery we have to stay in for 48-72 hours for babyto be monitored every 4 hours for any symptoms of neonatal hyperthyroidism then the MW has to coome to the house daily for 2 weeks to check on they baby. I was told we need to keep an eye out for symptoms for 6 weeks post delivery. During my pregnancy I have seen the Endocrinologists every 4 weeks and the obstetricians too as well as my normal MW appointments.

thanks oopandbabycoconut; it's good to hear that you and baby are doing well even after what you've been through! Thanks for sharing; it is reassuring.
