Nursery - what kind of mattress?

Hey ladies,

I'm just thinking of ordering a cotbed and mattress and I'm getting confused over the choice - what's the difference between foam and sprung mattresses for babies - or does it not matter?

What have you all chosen?

Thanks!

There is a substantial difference in cost! A cheap foam one isn't very nice, a hugely expensive one is potentially a lot to spend if you think you will move your little one out of the cot by the time they're two say and move in a new baby because you'll need to buy again for the new baby (it's recommended to have a new mattress for each child as a precaution against SIDS.)

So - what are you going to do with the cot bed? If you're using it for this child is say 4 or 5 I would go for the more expensive sprung one because it will last better and hold shape and support them. If you have another baby you could just buy them a cot too - or borrow one and get a new mattress.

If you will move baby out and a new baby in i would go for a mid range one and foam would be fine. we had foam for dd2 and she slept just as well as dd3 on her mid range sprung one.

Thanks Northernlurker, this is helpful.

Originally I was hoping to get a mid-range sprung mattress, but the nursery furniture I like has just come up with a bundle deal which includes a basic foam mattress. I've tried swapping the mattresses around, hoping to just pay the added difference, but the special offer doesn't stand at all if I select a more expensive mattress.

Now just trying to decide whether to go for it or not...

Where is that from? You could start another thread asking about that particular brand of mattress?

moonstorm · 14/05/2010 18:06

I went for cheap cot/ cotbed and expensive mattress.

mum2oneloudbaby · 14/05/2010 20:04

i did the same as moonstorm.

Foam mattresses can be very warm.

What's as important as comfort though is how cleanable is it? even if they don't go through the whole dry at night/potty training day time nap it will be thrown up on, nappies will leak.

We got a mothercare one with a zip off topper that goes in the wash and plastic underneath that so any quick change in the night is simple. My SIL recommended it she had 2dcs before us it's the most useful and interesting thing i think she has ever said to me

I have the mothercare one with the zip off topper and for DS it was a lifesaver as he was a really sicky baby and I had to wash it most days (it dries really quickly). For DD I think I've only washed it twice in 2 years but unfortunately you probably need to order the mattress before you get the baby!

I personally would avoid foam unless I was on a very tight budget, equally I think top of the range is a waste of money as it doesn't get enough use.

If anyone is getting rid of their mattress don't throw it in the bin, they always go on freecycle as people want them as dog beds.

wow moomaa didn't realise they were in such short demand i got mine straight off the shelf

I went for a purflo matress www.purflo.com/acatalog/PurFlo_Cot_Mattress.html they're totally washable, so can be used for subsequent babies.

We had a mothercare sprung mattres for dc1 which wore out after 18months (our dc stay in their cots for 3 years!) and we bought a new one , foam made by rochingham, which was better. The sprung rochingham we got for dc2 was great even after 3 years use.

I had a foam cot mattress for dd 4 yrs ago & it was ok, lasted well seemed alright. This time I have had a fully sprung one made to measure from babywisemattresses.co.uk as had trouble getting one to fit the cot as it's an old one that's been handed down in the family. I found could get a fully sprung one for not much more than a mid range foam one. Not been used yet but certainly feels more comfy than the last one. Can't recommend the company highly enough either really helpful, in all I had 3 mattresses from them, a crib, pram & cot one & all were non standard measurements.

DH is a physio and always says cheap bed frame and most expensive mattress you can afford. He insisted on the same for the kids! Hence cot from ebay, mattress £140 John Lewis!

I went for a PurFlo mattress to www.purflo.com
It's been fabulous. Completely washable is really convenient, but the real peace of mind is that it's fully breathable so I know if bubby roles face down during the night she'll be fine. I bought it through the NCT webshop.
