BFP after MMC... and exercise!

I'm 5wks pregnant after a MMC earlier this year. I'm sure this is a really stupid question, but can I exercise before 12 weeks? I do a lot of pilates which I'm assuming is still ok but not sure about more high-impact stuff. I just kept going when I was pregnant with DS1 but having an MC has thrown me a bit!

Thanks for your help ladies!

Congratulations! Don't know how a MMC could effect whether or not it is sensible to exercise within 1st trimester - could you ask your GP? Am preggers with my first (20 weeks now) and was very fit (running, gym, lots of pilates). My MW told me I could continue with whatever I am used to doing. My GP told me to hold off on the high impact stuff. That said, you can run, although I gave it up at 14 weeks because it was just feeling horrible and I noticed my pelvis was becoming a bit unstable. You need to watch your heart rate during exercise. I think you are not supposed to go over about 145 bpm (am happy to be corrected as I really can't remember!). As for the pilates - yes and no. There are certain things that are not suitable so you might need to adapt a "normal" class or workout. For example inverted positions are not recommended, particularly during the first trimester. Although you want to keep up the pelvic stability exercises, you want to hold off on the deep deep abdominals. And obviously after the first trimester no exercises on your back. If you do an instructor-led class then you should tell them. A workout that is suitable for pregnancy should be brilliant.
I guess the other thing to think about is how you would feel if you did exercise and had another MC - God forbid. As I understand it, during the first trimester a MC has virtually nothing to do with what the mother did or did not do. It was going to happen regardless. Which is all very well from an intellectual point of view. But emotionally you might feel differently, even if there is no logical or medical reason for you to feel that way.
Good luck and congratulations again!

I became pregnant again after a MMC - was of course very worried about having another one. Exercise shouldn't increase the risk of an early MC, as they usually happen for chromosomal reasons. Kept exercising - running and weights - before 12 weeks and afterwards as long as I could (by 3rd trimester had to switch from running/jogging to walking on treadmill). However it's safer to switch to prenatal pilates or yoga rather than the regular kind, as some movements may not be great in pregnancy and also joints and ligaments all change so you need to be careful. Good luck and hope everything goes ok.

Thanks ladies. That's so helpful! I've got a pilates class tonight so I have sent my instructor a quick email to let her know. It's a small group so I suspect she'll be able to tailor stuff for me in the short term. My current course actually runs until the beginning of my second trimester so I think I'll see about shifting into a prenatal group then (as I won't be able to lie down anymore!). Anyway, we'll see!
