I know it's still relatively early days but I'm getting my knickers in a twist already!! DS1 is 3 & after a full on 44hours of labour I had to have an emergency csect as he just wasn't coming down - turns out he had the cord around his head & his neck so no amount of drugs were going to bring him any closer to popping out!!! I'm now pg again & am desperate for a natural delivery but keep hearing so many conflicting things I'm getting confused & worried. Firstly, yesterday my midwife said that they won't induce me (but I've just read in Tess Daly's book she was induced with 2nd birth after csect for 1st), also heard they won't let you labour for more than 9 hours, that they won't let you go over your due date ........can someone that has been there done that please tell me their experience or knowledge on the matter!! I know I will get to go through things with a consultant at 25 weeks but I can't wait till then!!
Thank you xx

There are lots of useful threads on the Childbirth board about VBAC - that is the best place to look. Also ask for an appointment with consultant or consultant midwife - your midwife may not know much about it, for example I am the first women my midwife has had who had a c-section first time round. Like you, I am confused and concerned, but will hopefully get more answers as time goes on.

Induction definitely happens - my friend was induced at the weekend (for a second time, first induction failed), and she gave birth to her DD with just gas and air, after a c-section for DS first time round!

Hi, I had a VBAC at home last summer . I'd had an emergency ceasarean 15months prior. The VBAC was amazing, although not the easiest labour, it was back to back and very long. But I loved every minute, it was fantastic in comparison to my section. However everyone has different experiences.

Basically I treaded very carefully with consultant and dropped hints of homebirth VBAC to 'test the waters' with him. I did A LOT of research on-line, books etc etc as soon as I found out, so by the time I was 38 weeks I was very well informed. This is very important. I had a feeling that my consultant wasn't going to stand by me having a hmebirth, but luckily for my 38/39 wk check he was on holiday. I spoke to the midwife at the hospital about what I was wanting and basically needed a consultant to sign my notes off "allowing" (although apparently you can have the birth you want in this country - they can't not allow you) me to have a homebirth. She said she knew one of the consultants who happened to be on would be more 'open' to this so she arranged for him to see me!

I basically explained exactly what I wanted and reasons for it. I compromised on things like having an IV thing in my hand set up just in case. I only live 5 mins from the hospital which I think helped. I can go into more detail if you'd like? But I ended up with an amazing experience, which healed me from the 1st! I had 4 midwives with me at the end when pushed baby out...I couldn't have had better care.

I had my time allowance extended during labour too, I think I took 15 hours (on paper) for 1st stage. But was only allowed the 2 hours for pushing, I pushed him out at 1hr58 - the paramedics were walking up my stairs!!!

Well, reading your post, there is no reason why you shouldn't have a successful vaginal birth - it seems unlikely that your next baby will have the problems with the cord that your DS did!

I have had 2 VBACs - DD1 was em c-s as she was a brow presentation and got stuck, and then my epidural didn't work so I ended up with a general anaesthetic. DD2 was a forceps birth. They weren't really concerned about the first stage of labour, but were concerned about how long they want you to push for - TBH, I was quite glad to have the help (after about 3 hours pushing) as I was knackered.

I was induced for DD3, due to medical reasons for her, rather than any issue with me going over dates (I was induced on my due date as she was better out than it, as it were!). The rule in my hospital is that they do not use the gel pessaries in VBACs, as once it's in, you can't take it out quickly. So I was straight to a synto drip (with epi, which worked this time) which can be stopped and is removed from the body swiftly. Was a fantastic birth, dozed through the first stage then pushed her out in 49 minutes! Different hospitals (and different consultants in the same hospital) have different views on induction, so it's worth shopping around to get one you get on with.

Would definitely second the idea to talk to hte consultant MW - (s)he has the most knowledge and, I found, is your greatest advocate in helping you get the birth you want which is also suitable for your baby.

Oh, that's turned into an epic! If you want more details on anything, let me know.

Had VBAC and then went back to CS for ds3. Was quite fiirm on it and lasted into 42 weeks but then was told would have to have the cs. Thankfully my waters broke teh night before I was due to go in.

Nothing further happened tho so they induced me, still nothing happened and so they tried ventouse, didn't work so they ended up with forceps and a third degree tear.

Saying this, if I had my time again I would still ask for a vbac for ds2 simply because I wanted a large family and knew that after 2 cs they would be a bit reluctant to let me have another. Went back to cs for ds3 only because ds2 received a sn diagnosis when I was pregnant with ds3 so we had to call it a day on the breeding front and cs recovery was easier than sitting on rubber rings for weeks!

Stick to your guns as long as you can with the VBAC good luck

I had a VBAC, which went pretty well but did require quite a bit of intervention at the end, but this would probably have happened if it had been my first childbirth.
