anyone had bladder infection/UTI in pregnancy?

im almost 34 weeks and think ive got the above but not certain. have got bit of pain in my bladder sometimes, am weeing frequently (but then i am very pregnant and drink lots of water), and am getting braxton hicks a lot which ive heard can be a sign of infection.
does anyone know if diagnosis is as simple as urine test? i really don't want anything invasive (not yet anyway!). also, does anyone know if they test for uti's etc when you take your wee to the midwife? or is that just for protein/sugar?

I had a uti when I was about 20 weeks pg

afaik they don't routinely check at the mw

PLEASE tell you mw your suspicions I think a uti can lead to prem labour testing for one is non invasive

good luck

Call the gp, they can test your urine for infection and give you antibiotics if needed. In the mean time, cranberry juice can help if it is that or if it's developing.

oh, i hate going to the gp - he's rubbish. and my gp surgery doesnt allow pushchairs so that means a trip on bus with squirmy 16month old... urgh!
better to be safe than sorry i guess - dont want a prem baby, poor sausage.

get the anti-B;s!

i am on my second UTi this pregnancy - drinking water isn't enough to guarantee it clears,

diagnosis = stick dip in wee. They look for white blood clls, protein etc...

UTIs can become very painful and draining, although i don't like taking Anti-bs in pregnancy (expected side effect: thrush) it is much better IMO.

Your surgery doesn't allow buggies? What do folks using wheelchairs do?

EdgarAllenPoll · 11/05/2010 13:45

Your surgery doesn't allow buggies?

MAD AS CHEESE ISN'T IT!

maybe everyone should take them anyway, and if someone objects, hand the child to them to hold...

I've suffered from UTI's from early pregnancy and am now 27 weeks pregnant. Get the anti-b's, GP said that UTI's in pregnancy need to be treated because of the bacteria. Oh well, thank God for free presciptions in pregnancy, I would have spent a fortune on them by now due to UTI's.

The mw should dip your urine at each visit and if you suspect an infection she should send of your sample to the lab. Either that or GP appt, which ever is sooner or easier for you. Can you not leave your buggy outside the surgery?
Cranberry juice has proven helpful effects in the meantime. Good luck.

alannabanana · 11/05/2010 18:21

i know the buggy thing is soooo annoying - good old 'elf and safety apparently. someone might trip over it of course. you can leave them outside (in the rain) but i wouldn't want my travel system nicked frankly!

thanks for all responses guys. im seeing the midwife on friday anyway for regular appt, so i'll mention it then. will down the cranberry in the meantime. can you take cranberry supplements in pregnancy? are they any good anyone know?

When I had a suspected uti, my midwife sent my urine sample off for testing, I'm sure your midwife can do the same. Save a trip to the rather dodgy sounding dr's
