I'm 6 weeks and this is my first pregnancy. I was wondering if any other Mums/Mums 2 B had a colposcopy while pregnant, as i'm scared and i don't see my midwife till i'm 8 and a half weeks. I just think i have enough to worry about with now ill and weird i am feeling (thank you to all that have posted on 'Fed up with early pregnancy'(at least i think it was called that!!)) I have the brain span of a gold fish right now and i really want to cry

I don't think a dr would give you a colposcopy when pg.

I saw a dr a the Portland when I was 10 weeks, and he said no way. I had it on the NHS when DS was 3 months old.

Did you get a colposcopy appointment before you were pregnant? I'd call the clinic and ask them if they still want to see you now or wait til after the baby.

I had a colposcopy in Aug 09 and had a re-call in mar 10 but he only did a smear. I fell pregnant in april and got the appointment letter last week to go back in Sept. I rang them and they said that they'll still do the colposcopy and that if they think the changes down there in my cells need monitoring that they will do one every 12 weeks if the midwife says so and then 8 weeks after i have given birth. I'm also scared that any cell change down there would harm my baby.

Hi,

Just to give you some back ground. I am currently 32 weeks pregnant and a week before I got pregnant I had a routine smear test. The results came through when I was 7 weeks pregnant showing abnormalities and inviting me for a colposcopy when I had at the portland around 8-9 weeks pregnant. During the pregnancy I have had 4 colposcopy to check that there has been no changes to the abnormalities which thankfully they haven't and now I dont need to go back until 8 weeks after my due date for another colposcopy and to talk about what treatment I will be having to remove the abnormal cells.

So yes it is safe to have a colposcopy during pregnancy as they only check up to the cervix and baby is not near here. The jury seems to be out on whether or not treatment is 100% which is why I have delayed treatment until afterwards but continued to have check ups to make sure it wasn't getting any worse - it was vey unlikely to get worse during a pregnancy but it was good to know.

I would recommend talking to MW (if have one yet), the consultant you are being referred to for the colposcopy and ask as many questions as poss and ask for diagrams to reassure you. Also only look on NHS website or other official websites for any research, I also found Cancer Research UK website informative too.

I remember it was a very stressful time for me being in early pregnancy and having this news but my pregnancy has progressed really well and treatment will remove all abnormalities after I have given birth and I feel I have been really looked after my consultants and MW relating to this.

Hope my experience helps a little sorry for long post. Try not to worry, ask lots of questions and make an informed decision for you and you baby.

Good luck

Also the cell changes will not harm your baby but again I would recommend asking consultant as they will be ableto reassure you too.

Thank you so much hippopo for sharing your experience, you have made me feel more relaxed about it and given me lots of positives on something that has made me feel so negative. Thank you hope everything's going well for you and your baby

Omg Hippopo reading your story is mirroring my life to practically the same dates.
I am currently 33+5 and had an abnormal smear result shortly after finding out I was pregnant.
The colposcopy showed some high and moderate abnormal cells, and they invited me for a check back at 16 weeks which showed nothing had changed. (They would not do a biopsy during pregnancy due to the onset of bleeding and cramping)
Babs is due 8th July and I will be going for treatment some time in October.
The early weeks were pretty hard emotionally, but due date is now around the corner and nothing could be further from my mind.
I really hope all goes well with all the ladies on this thread.x

I had a colposcopy in July 2009 following a number of abnormal smears. I was due to go back for another in six months time but in the meantime I became pregnant in September 2009. I mentioned this to my midwife and basically I was booked in to see a consultant which was very straightforward. When my re-call letter came through I went along as normal for the colposcopy but they were obviously aware that I was pregnant.

Basically they just have a look at the cervix and informed me that they wouldn't do any treatment until after I had the baby.

Anyway, thankfully, my abnormalities had cleared up and I have been put back under the care of my midwife.

Hope this helps

i also had a colposcopy when i was 5 mnths pregnant last time. i had loads of abnormal smears and have had a couple of treatments too. anyway i went along and she told me that i did not have to have it but after going all the way to the hospital i thought i would just have it. it was ok if a little painful. a couple of days later i started bleeding and it scared the shit out of me so went down to get checked out and it was all fine. if i were you i would delay it until after you have the baby. i went back again 3 months after giving birth and it was all fine.

hope this helps!
