I've just had a phone call from the receptionist at the GPs saying that my doctor wants me in for a fasting blood test following my 28 week bloods last week. Since she's the receptionist, she can't comment on why the testing is needed, but I'm assuming they suspect gestational diabetes.

I can't go in for the test until Thursday due to my work, but am now pretty tense worrying about having GD. I have no symptoms, and am measuring normal size. However, I have several of the risk factors - previous big baby, family history of diabetes, and I'm a bit overweight.

So, anyone out there been called in when its a false alarm?

Yeah, I had that done, I think because I failed two wee sugar tests.

I was failing the wee tests because I was doing them straight after breakfast, just before my midwife appointments. Only weetabix but it was enough.

Anyway, the fasting test was fine, false alarm.

its probably for suspected GD, but in my experience they normally do a GTT for that in pregnancy, not the normal fastinng bloods they normally do for non pregnant ppl.

I have a family history of diabetes, my dads type 2 diabetic and had to have a glucose tolerance tests at 28 weeks and mine was fine

You say you have a few risk factors. Also that you had a blood test last week. So it's not at all unreasonable of the GP.

Good luck with the results. Even if it is GD it doesn't mean you'll necessarilly get onto insulin injections. You may manage it with diet alone.

Yeah, every time and 3 times with DS2 (can't remember why 3 - may have been twice as I made the mistake of peeing on a stick at home and got +++ sugar). I have been as much as 16stone in pregnancy and nothing to worry about, also with a 10lb 4oz baby (first was 6 6) I ate a diabetic type diet as precaution though but I don't eat white bread/pasta/rice etc anyway, or ready meals etc etc. I am actually going to refuse next time because I physically have alot alot of trouble with the drink they give me, but it really doesn't hurt to just go and get it done and forget about it It doesn't hurt to cut back on white bread, pasta, rice, potatoes other than new pots, anything processed, high salt, high sugar etc. etc. anyway. One thing you don't do is cut back on cheese milk like I think the diabetic type diet does (?? I may be wrong) (may be getting muddled with slimming world diet there though)

So, er, yeah, 3 pregnancies, all fine. They do test alot alot of people, they have to really.

Oh, I know they are not being unreasonable. Its just that I had a horrible induced birth with DS, and if I have GD, I can see my hopes of a MlU water birth floating away. silly really, because I know that so long as we are both healthy, it doesn't matter in the long term.

As far as I know, I didn't fail any of the wee tests, the receptionist said I needed to redo the fasting test, which I haven't done in the first place - I just had the standard bloods taken at 28 weeks. I did have lunch an hour before the tests, didn't occur to me that I shouldn't.

The only thing that I have noticed as different to the last pregnancy is in the last week I have had a couple of strange dizzy spells where my arms and legs go jelly-like. I was in the middle of one of those when the bloods were taken. My blood pressure was normal.

I was nearly admitted with pre eclampsia because I had high BP once, what turned outto be migrane and when I went for a routine clinic appointment I hadn't eaten yet so my wee showed protien and ketones. All scary together, but high BP I have no idea why it was high that once, visual troubles turned out to be 'just' migranes and the wee test was me being rushed. I am sure you will be fine, as I said they give these tests to alot of women, I have been in a queue of result giving and overheard "yep, your fine. Yep, your fine. Yep, your fine" they must almost get weary of it!

I had to do a GTT and it turned out fine. I don't know why I had to do it - maybe I failed the wee test as I always had a morning appt which would have been soon after breakfast? Or maybe my rapid weight gain? No other risk factors afaik.
