SPD

My daughter suffered from SPD during her second pregnancy 12 months ago. She is now pregnant again, with twins! She is only 13 weeks at the moment, and so far so good, but I wonder if there is anything that she can do to avoid getting SPD this time.

I had bad SPD last time and have been to see a chiro this time. It has really helped beyond any of my wildest hopes. I am 30 weeks pregnant at the moment and can function normally. If she can afford it, I would really recommend it

ive got really bad SPD for the first time in this, my 3rd pregnancy. ive heard that an osteopath can be fantastic for keeping up the right movement etc, but its not something you get on the NHS. at the first sign of problems get the midwife to refer her to the physio so they can help her asap

jenka As far as I know there is no way you can avoid getting it. If you get it you get it, if you don't then that's good. I'd recommend the physio too for advice on what not to do or what to do - if she has had it before then she will at least know what to expect.
I am recovering from it at the moment and I have been advised by my physio not get to pregnant for at least a year to let my body recover, unless I want to be wheelchair bound for the whole pg this time! She has said I must strengthen my abdominals and keep doing pelvic floors to strengthen the whole pelvis area. If there is another pg for me I will be trying extremely hard to follow that advice, it might make things in my pelvis 'stay in place' a bit longer, and give me more support against the relaxin hormone.

An osteopath or chiro may also be able to help with any out of alignment issues, but sometimes physio can do this too if it's early enough. Good Luck for your daughter, it's certainly not easy having SPD, make sure she tries to rest - with your help and support I am sure she will be able to achieve a balance and hopefully it won't get too bad.

Just realised that the exercises I am doing at the moment are to close my abdominal separation - this occured early on in my pg and the abdominals support the pubic symphysis joint and the whole pelvic area, if you see this other post it has links in it, the exercises can be done in pg and are also designed to avoid the abdominals from separating and help to push babies out:

Thank you all for your advice and I am sure my daughter will find it helpful.

Have a good day.
