Heart Burn - so bad!!

lay82 · 10/05/2010 14:35

I have always suffered with heart burn due to anxiety and ended up on tablets a few years ago. I always went back to the doctors when work got bad etc and would go back on them for a few weeks. Now I am 27 weeks it is back with vengance. I must add not sue to work as I am pretty chilled at the moment!

If I burp to clear the pain, it goes all up my back and the pain will go as far as my jaw for a few seconds. Gaviscon is my new best friend I am sure my little girl will come out pink and smelling of ainseed. Gavison will always clear it in minutes.

Does anyone else have any experience of this and did the pain get worse as the pregnancy went on or will it be one of those things that disapreas!!

xx

They say it happens when your baby has hair. I've not experienced it badly myself (I'm expecting a bald baby anyway) but my mum (when pregnant with my sister) and sister (when pregnant with my nephew) both had it bad from about 25 weeks until the end of their pregnancies and they both had babies with jet black hair.

Good luck with the rest of the pregnancy, I hope the heartburn does stop for you eventually!

I have it horribly and have been given gavison advance on prescription from the MW as it was costing me a fortune buying a 500ml bottle every 5 days. According to the consultant you can't take too much gaviscon but you need to drink a bit more as it has quite a high salt level.

Chynah · 10/05/2010 15:18

Had it a bit with DS but nothing gaviscon couldn't handle. With DD though she was breech til 34 weeks an presing everything up - heartburn was appaling and I would vomit even in my sleep with the acid (TMI) - got tablets from doctor to sort it but it got so much better once she turned.

hi,iv suffered terribley with it with all pregnancies. And for me it just gets worse, its starts bout 12weeks untill week after baby born.

I find eatin white bread or crisps seems to make it worse. starchy things really. Drinking full fat milk really easies it,even more so then gaviscon for me. I have shots of milk all day.

oopsandbabycoconut · 10/05/2010 15:38

Forgot to say the MAgnum white are fantastic at easing it - it works better than gaviscon alot of the time.

lay82 · 10/05/2010 15:58

I do keep being told she will have lots of hair!

Thanks for the replies. I will try the milk sugestion along with Magnum white.

Ki I think you could be right about bread as it does seem worse when I have bread and crips come to think of it. Another thing to avoid along with tomatoes and chocolate!

Hae you tried Gaviscon advance? It's only available in liquid form from pharmacies (supermarkets etc don't stock it). Whilst you can buy it, ask your GP to prescribe it, it'll save you £9 for a 600ml bottle. I've gone through the entire gaviscon range this pregnancy and since 37weeks GP prescribed this one and it definitely works more effectively for me and is longer lasting.

paulaplumpbottom · 10/05/2010 16:06

I had horrible heartburn with DD and she was bald till she was two. I had no heartburn with DS and he was born with more hair than I have ever seen on a newborn so the hair thing is just a myth.

Hi all
I am expecting DC3,have always had heartburn but suffered terribly with dd1, would have to sit up night for hours on end, even gaviscon was ineffective but with dd2 was much better as I was drinking a cup of fresh mint tea every evening which prevented the heartburn completely. You can also try the Twinings peppermint teabags but they are not as strong as fresh mint(but could try using 2 teabags?) . To make fresh mint tea boil a small amount of green tea leaves in water and add fresh mint leaves and simmer then add sugar to taste.

hi,
i asked my midwife for any tips because I was waking up every hour or so in the night and felt like the acid indigestion was actually burning out my throat! she said I could dissolve a soluble paracetomol in hot water then add some peppermint oil and drink it while it's still warm. It really helps with my indigestion and trapped wind when the gaviscon just hasn't shifted it. She also told me to eat a plain yoghurt or drink some milk after every meal.
Hope you feel better soon!
(the white magnum idea sounds more fun though!!)

Poor you, I've had terrible heartburn since 21 weeks and have been relying on zantac tablets (prescribed by an obstetrician) which have made a huge difference. What I eat also makes a difference: anything spicy, acidic or remotely interesting to eat makes it worse! Hot drinks also make it worse, but I love bread at the moment and can't eat enough of it. Heartburn in pregnancy can be so painful, it's woken me from sleep before and makes me feel sick a lot of the time. So you have all my sympathy, FWIW mine hasn't got worse so far (now 29 weeks) and if it did I'd be asking for omeprazole from my GP which should knock it on the head.

cinnamongreyhound · 10/05/2010 17:29

I couldn't stomach gaviscon when I was pregnant first time and had horrible heartburn. I am 24 weeks now and have been having it for a number of weeks already. I really find milk helps as it did before, I just sip it slowly so it coats everything.

My worst triggers are sweet things, I actually find white bread and other carbs actually help.

LuluF · 10/05/2010 17:49

I had it really badly with all three, and I'm beginning to get it again at 6 weeks. For me, it doesn't ease (but stops when the baby is born) - and everything causes it (even water) only Gavison helps.

People say that small frequent meals, of non-greasy, non-spicy food helps. It might work for you (never did for me though).

(And none of my babies have been all that hairy.)

Claire236 · 10/05/2010 18:10

I had terrible heartburn pretty much all the way through both of my pregnancies. I was prescribed ranitidine (Zantac) first time round & Omeprazole (think that's how it's spelt) second time round both of which were much better than Gaviscon.

beccas · 10/05/2010 18:48

Dreadful indigestion!
Bald baby (well no 1 was at least, wait and see with this one!)
Potato is the enemy
Iced water helps
Doesn't get any worse throughout the pregnancy
Gaviscon ADVANCE is the only thing that helps, swig out the bottle like a drunk!
I seem to exceed suggested dose within about 4 hours!
33 weeks, nearly there.....

biggest · 10/05/2010 20:15

Ice cream works wonders for me, Gaviscon is ok but the texture of the advance stuff makes me retch! With ice cream I still get some reflux but it is cool and vanilla flavoured.

Apologies for the graphic description!

LuluF · 11/05/2010 12:20

And - it's ice cream (always a good thing). Does froen yoghurt have the same benfits? I'm thinking low calorie/low fat here - my bottom needs no encouragement to expand during pregnancy.

Chynah · 11/05/2010 22:28

omprazole (sp) is tons better than even gaviscon advance (lansprazole (sp) is also great) if you can get doctor to prescribe it to you.
