Changing hospital in last few weeks?

Bit of an "ARGH HELP" post! I'm 33 weeks pregnant and we have just found out we will almost definitely be moving about 30 miles south in the last 4 weeks before my due date. This would take around 50 mins up the M6 to get back to my chosen hospital to give birth.

Can you change hospital at this stage? Bit of a thick one but how do you go about doing it?

Hi.I changed hospitals although I did it at about 16 weeks. My midwife said I had to see my GP.I saw the GP who filled out a form and within 3 or 4 days the hospital had booked me in for a 'booking in' appointment and had arranged a scan.Very efficient.
So...see your GP as it's not something your midwife can do.

Thanks for replying. Did you have to see your new GP, or would I see my current GP? As obviously don't have a doctor in the new town yet. It's all a bit disorganised and sudden!

Don't worry about it! I am moving a 4.5 hour drive away 5 days before EDD!!

I did the same shortly before DS is born. Have a word with your consultant. Mine has already written to new hospital explaining situation and forwarding a copy of my notes. If baby comes early, we have it here. If not, we have it there. It's not ideal, but as long as everyone knows what's going to happen it should go smoothly.

With regards to GP, I was unable to register with GP in new town because we don't have an address there yet. I will do so the day we move! Your GP where you are now is perfectly capable of writing to the hospital in new town and preparing them for your arrival.

p.s. Good luck with the moe and your new LO!

I split my care between two health authorities when I had dd.

Midwife care where I worked and Consultant/Midwife care where I wanted to give birth in my home town 100 miles away. I also spent six weeks (summer holidays) in my home town in the middle of my pregnancy. Top notch care in both areas.

Nobody made this difficult for me or made me feel it an unreasonable request.

Actually, in truth, DH has just pointed out that we moved health authorities 4 times during pregnancy with DS, our notes did get lost the last time, but it wasn't a big deal. We just told them what had happened so far and they accepted our word, gave us a new set of notes.

The originals turned up about 4 months after DS was born, but it really wasn't a problem without them.

Just relax and enjoy your last few weeks of not having to get up for night feeds!!

I swapped with ds1.

All along I had said that I wanted to have him at a certain hospital (where there were Drs available and a NNU on site if needed), but the community midwives were adamant that I should have him at the nearest hospital which had just changed to a midwife led unit. I had nagging doubts about going there that I just couldn't shift, and we live an equal distance from 2 hospitals with full maternity units. One has a dreadful reputation (and would be the one that I would have been transferred to from the mlu if there had have been a problem), and one has a great reputation. So I wanted to go for the latter (obviously!).

All through the pregnancy I kept on to my mw's that I wished my care to be under the 2nd hospital, but it was only at 34 weeks that they gave in and sent a referral. I booked in with them a week later, and all went well.

As it turned out I had to be induced, so wouldn't have been able to go to the mlu!

It wasn't a problem for me, and I hope it's not for you either.

I changed hospitals at 32 weeks just because I changed my mind. I self referred and it was very easy.

i changed hospitals last time midway through. Just told the midwife i wanted to swop (we too had moved house) and she sorted it with a phonecall to make me an apt at the new one - simple as.
