is it safe to get your hair highlighted during pregnancy?

Seems a really vain and pathetic question to ask looking at all the other subjects on here but am not sure and wanted to ask advice as cant seem to find a straight answer anywhere!

I think not - check with your hairdresser though.

Its perfectly safe to get your hair dyed whilst pregnant. (So says the eminent doctor who wrote my pregancy book!)

PotPourri · 07/05/2010 09:19

yes, with the foils so not to9uching your skin

I'm 35+ and have had my hair highlighted all the way through, just asked my hairdresser not to go too close to the root. Would have had it dyed though as too much scalp contact. He said highlighting was fine.

There's no evidence that it causes problems either way, but I wanted to be on the safe side. Have seen loads of pregnant women in getting their hair done.

Couldn't stand 9 months worth of roots!!

iam a hairdresser and if u were my client i would say- the only reason not to is hormones it may go darker/lighter not quite on tone due to this, we have been trained to skin test our clients 48 hrs b4 every colour service, this will make u feel happier to.

i have been hairdressing 10 yrs and coloured many preg clients, never came across what i mentioned b4 but if ur stylist is well trained she should inform u.

my 1s dc i had highlights only as i felt bit more uneasy about everything, but this time i have full colour plus h/l with no problems x

As I understand it there is no evidence that dying your hair during pregnancy causes problems. I think there was a small amount of evidence from some time ago that suggested that hair colourists who are pregnant may have a slightly increased risk of miscarriage. Can't remember the source for this, I'm afraid, and am more than happy to be corrected if I've misremembered this. I think the research was not recent though. And in any case hair colourists work with dye all the time and are therefore in a different position from a client who may get their hair coloured just a few times during pregnancy.
If you want to be cautious, then highlighting is the best option because the application of the dye and the foils means that the dye does not come into contact with your scalp, except for the short duration when it is washed out.
I had mine dyed at the beginning of my second trimester (didn't avoid the first due to any concerns, but because I didn't need to get it done then), told my hairdresser who didn't express any worries about going ahead with the treatment at all. When the grey comes through again, I'll be back for another treatment!!
Have just checked NHS website which states that using hair dye is fine:
www.nhs.uk/chq/Pages/949.aspx?CategoryID=54&SubCategoryID=131
Recommend waiting until after 12 weeks and state highlighting is the better option.

p.s obviously if u need a toner after h/ls then it will 100 percent go on ur scalp, so if u r being careful check if u normally have one!

I'm 36 weeks and have got myself booked in tomorrow to have highlights, have left it this long but the roots are now TOO visible! I've already once had it done since being pregnant and agree, as long as it doesn't touch skin, you are pretty safe...

I don't think there is any evidence to say it isn't safe but being ultra-cautious I have avoided having mine done in the first trimester and will book in for the next few weeks as there is no way on earth I can leave it much longer!

vmcd28 · 08/05/2010 14:42

I was told to avoid it in the first trimester, but highlights were fine, as the chemicals dont really touch your skin. I was told not to get a full hair dye, as it is in contact with your scalp for a while, and could get into the blood stream if you have a small scratch or cut. All of these are big ifs, but I guess they are risks that are there.
I had highlights the day before I got my BFP, so I wasnt too proud of myself...
