What's with the no high heels thing?

When I have been telling people I am pregnant (12+4 today) they keep looking at my feet aghast and telling me I shouldn't be wearing heels. Why?

Is it a balance thing? A falling over thing?

I wear heels to work but sit down all day and mainly flats at weekends but heels if I go out. Should I be switching to more flats or will I know when it is time to give up?

ta lala - i cannot hear them either

expecting dc4 and still in heels......

never give up darling, never ever

storminabuttercup · 04/05/2010 14:18

i've had the same thing - will wear mine until they are no longer comfortable - unless someone can tell me a reason why i shouldnt?

bumbums · 04/05/2010 14:20

Its meant to be to prevent back or pelvis pain which you are at risk of because of your ligaments softening with the pregnancy hormones. But to be honest you wear whatever you feel happy in. You'll decide to stop wearing heels when they cause you pain. Or not!

MrsRhettButler · 04/05/2010 14:21

i wouldn't worry whilst you are small but when you start to get a large bump then i would worry about balance as even if it was just a small twist of your foot it could strain your stomache area as this gets softer during pg...

i may get flamed but i also don't think it looks nice with a big belly (sorry ladies)

PrivetDancer · 04/05/2010 14:23

I think it's just the balance thing, so more relevant to when you're a lot bigger and centre of gravity is different. If you find them comfy then don't worry about it.

tartyhighheels · 04/05/2010 14:24

crikey i wasn't aware that big bumps and heels were such a faux pas......

bumbums is right with the science bit but flats are horrid and i am shallow

Ripeberry · 04/05/2010 14:26

Because you will kill your back, danger of falling over as your center of gravity will change and you will overcompensate and finally, your feet will get HUGE and you will get bunions.
Flatties are a girls best friend

Ripeberry · 04/05/2010 14:28

P.S I've never worn high heels as they hate me

strawberrycake · 04/05/2010 14:29

You'll know when it begins to hurt your back/ feet. See that as the time to stop and don't push it! In the meantime ballet pumps in your handbag just in case can be a lifesaver.

I fell tottered into the labour ward wearing high heels when I gave birth to DC3, only wore them because I couldn't bend down to put any sensible shoes on. Midwife thought I was a loon.

I didn't wear them throughout pregnancy though as my ankle ligaments went all soft and weak and I was scared I'd break a leg!

Grandhighpoohba · 04/05/2010 15:04

I thought it was because the hormone that soften the ligaments in your pelvis also acts on the ligaments in your ankles? I certainly notice that my ankles collapse on uneven ground more often, even in flats.

Anyway - my feet and legs ache so much by the end of the day that I don't think I could face heels.

gingerkirsty · 04/05/2010 15:09

I am with bumbum and grandhighpoohba - the reason high shoes are not recommended is due to the softening of your ligaments - they have to soften around your pelvis to allow the baby to be born, but the hormones cannot affect only the pelvis so all your joints are more stretchy than normal. Therefore your ankles are weaker than usual, and your back is more prone to damage from bad posture caused by heels.

PLUS you really do not want to fall over whilst pregnant, I did it (wearing trainers but managed to trip over a tent peg) and scared the bejeesus out of myself!

You will probably find that later in pg you will go off the idea in any case!

thumbwitch · 04/05/2010 15:12

yes, what gingerkirsty said.

virgo1979 · 04/05/2010 15:33

I agree - I refused to give mine up too, until about 28 weeks when my feet started killing me and I did start to feel wobbly. I would kick them off when at work but carrying laptop bag and handbag and heels just became too much, so i ditched the heels. cant wait to wear them again though. Flats are sensible but oh so boring...

virgo1979 · 04/05/2010 15:34

Oh and I tripped over the last step at Nottingham train station, wearing flats!! God knows what would have happened if i was wearing heels.....

TulipsInTheSunshine · 04/05/2010 16:18

My physio during my last pregnancy gave out to me for wearing heeled boots... until i explained that actually my back hurts less when i'm in heels as i'm more comfortable in them than flats, and they aggravated my spd less whilst driving as i can balance on the heel and just move my foot as opposed to moving my whole leg to operate the pedals.

Surprisingly she was perfectly happy with that explanation and said as long as they weren't causing me discomfort then they were fine
