Hi, I havent done HypnoBirthing in Glasgow, but what I would say is I only used the book, didnt have classes at all, and it worked a treat for me.

have you read the book yet?

lelarose · 04/05/2010 20:56

No I have bought it the other day but not read yet. Is it the Marie Mongan one you mean? I would like the cd as well but seems it cant be bought seperately. Did you have that as well?

I'm really interested that it worked for you without the classes as to be honest I can't really afford them. Would you mind telling me a bit more about what you did and how it worked for you?

Thanksfor your reply x

Ah the book is really good - BUT I had to put it down at times, as she does get quite preachy.

I have the HypnoBirthing CD right in front of me, do you want me to do you a copy?

The book and CD worked for me a treat; I really got a lot out of learning WHY and HOW my body was doing what it would do doing labour, it really helped me get into the right mindset. The breathing techniques helped give me something to focus on too, and the visualisations did too. I didnt do any of the "anchoring" stuff, or the mantras as that wouldnt personally work for me, IYSWIM?

Is this your first baby?

lelarose · 05/05/2010 12:17

Yes it is my first, and having read a little bit of the book last night I really think it makes sense. I hate hospitals and think the whole thing has become so incredibly over medicalised and I'd like to feel in control as much as I realistically can. I'm not naive though, and if I need pain relief I'll have it I just want to do my best to feel as calm as posible as it makes perfect sense to me that more nervous tension=more pain and stress.

It's quite annoying as there is a hospital just outside of my area that offers the classes for free, but I will have to pay £250. Also my partner works away a lot and won't be able to come to all the classes with me. So you think it's possible to use the methods effectively without the actual classes?

Thanks so much for the offer of the cd. Last night I also found out my friend's sister in law says she will do me a copy, but if I don't get it soon i will let you know.

It is possible to learn the basics with the book and CD (you are breaking copyright by copying it by the way) but the classes give you much more than the basics. You could use your health in preg grant and if you are really struggling for cash most teachers will consider doing a deal; discount or payment plan.

wahwahwah · 05/05/2010 12:29

When are you due? I am too far away (sorry). Go onto the HypnoBirthing website and put in a request.

The new book doens't have the CD and using the book, obviously, you don't get the hypno-treatments (which are quite useful).

If you do other hypnosis for birth, please be aware that most seem to come from the angle of 'coping with pain' rather that Mickeys angle of 'pain isn't necessarily a part of giving birth'.

cluckyduck · 05/05/2010 12:46

I think you have the right attitude lelarose - please don't put all your eggs in this basket, and do read all the blurb on medical pain relief in case you need it. Giving birth is a very small part of motherhood, and if you need drugs then please do take them .

For me, personally, yes I would say it is possible to use the methods effectively without classes; but I am sure ladies that have had the classes will tell you that they were helpful too, and everyone is different after all.

Sorry that isnt much of an answer isnt it?!

Have you been on to any hypnobirthing forums to talk to other hypnobirthers?

lelarose · 05/05/2010 17:15

No I haven't, as didn't know there were any. Believe me, i'm not ruling out pain relief. I know that whe the time comes I will do whatever it takes just to get throught the process and there is no point saying you will or won't take drugs, we all just do what we can at the time. I would just like to explore the alternatives as far as possible.

wahwahwah- I'm not due til mid ctober but think its best to start soon as possible. Will try yor suggestion with the website, thanks.

ohmeohmy- yes I will use this money I guess just have so many other financial pressures with the baby coming as you will understand, so will ask around and see what I can do to reduce costs.

Thanks guys x

Lelarose - there's a good one here- if you google 'babycentre hypnobirthing' it'll come up- loads of amazing stories, honest opinions and a couple of pracitioners frequent it!

Keep us informed how it goes

JennyPiccolo · 05/05/2010 22:19

That sounds pretty expensive, my mums a hypnotherapist just outside glasgow and it'd probably cost you less for one-on-one sessions. Make sure to contact a hypnotherapist who's accredited by the British Society of Clinical Hypnotherapists if you're doing that though, there's a lot of con artists about.

lelarose · 06/05/2010 19:21

Hi Jenny, thanks I do have a proper hypnotherapist round the corner but she tells me I need someone specifically qualified in hypnobirthing.

Cluckduck- thanks for the tip I just had a look at that
