Am I leaving it too late?

I have arranged an appointment with the GP and could only get one at 9 weeks. Will this be enough time for them to arrange a midwife before my 12 week scan or doesn't it matter? i want to ask the midwife about testing etc.

I had my booking in at 9wks. It was fine. Just make sure the MW confirms your details are "on the system" at the hospital so you can ring to book a scan immediately after seeing her.

Hi Dueling! It varies from place to place but what thay call the booking appt here is with the mw and you have to see the gp before that. The main date to keep in mind is the nuchal scan has to be before 13w6d. You don't have to have that if you choose not to but you need the information so you can decide. When I had dc1 I lived in Surrey and did not have my booking in until after i'd had the nuchal scan. Where i live now that would never happen as you have to talk it through with a mw or attend a talk before you go for screening. Antenatal services vary a lot!

I think I do want the Nuchal scan though I am worried that oce they factor my age into it (I am 40) then the stats will be pretty much useless?

Really I don't know enough about it all and was hoping to ask the midwife.

AM pretty certain I would have to go private anyay as am sure they don't do it as a matter of course where I am.

Oh - and yes, what I am having at 9 weeks is the GPs appointment.

How long does it take between seeing the GP to tell them you are pregnant and seeing a midwife for the booking apointment?

Should I perhaps try to call in the mornings to be seen immediately?

Maybe you should call your gp reception and ask them how it works in your area, they may be able to tell you.It doesn't really matter if you don't see your usual gp as they just do the paperwork and refer you to the mw.I don't think 9 weeks is too late for them to sort out things for you but it's nice to get these things sorted out so you know what to expect.

Hi Duelling!

I had my checking in appointments at 9weeks both times, and it was fine, they got me in the system pretty quickly.

With my DS they gave me a scan date that would have been at 14wks, too late for nuchal, so I rang my community midwife and expalined and she organised me an earlier scan, so there are ways around that.

I would ring the GP and get the appt ASAP, explain that you want the nuchal tests and they should organised those for you.

Good luck, hope its all going well

I agree with LooL00, talk to your GP reception to find out how it works in your area. Ask if you can self-refer to the midwife, in my area you can do that and it skips out the (usually rather useless) GP appt. altogether. If you have to wait a while for the appt., ask the receptionist if the midwife can do the referral for your scan before your booking appt. I didn't see my midwife for booking until 10 wks, but she had already arranged the scan date by then.
