hi everyone, i had 2 have a ventouse delivery with dd as she was in distress after a very very long labour, they told me at the time i would probably have a normal delivery next time but just wondered if anyone had gone through the same and managed to have their next baby without intervention,

yes me and about 4 other people I know.

In fact I don't know anyone who had to have a second ventouse.

Good luck!

maxmissie · 02/05/2010 21:48

I had to have a second ventouse with my ds, didn't have long labour in either case (both 11 hours) - dd needed to be got out quick as had done a poo (!) and ds was in an awkward position and so I needed some help at the end. I'm sure but for him being in a funny position I would have had him without ventouse though, it was just one of those things, certainly wasn't intentional to have them both this way!

runnybottom · 02/05/2010 21:50

I had 2 ventouse deliveries, and then a natural delivery for the 3rd. They were all OP (face up) which makes instrumental delivery much more likely.

princessmel · 02/05/2010 21:51

Yes me.
forceps amd ventouse with ds1, normal with dd and ds2.

Hell yes!! Loong labour and ventouse with DD1, 4 hours labour and just gas & air triumphant labour with DD2. I know someone else with exact same experience too.
Not sure if key, but first labour contractions short & weak so tried having raspberry leaf tea at 37 weeks onwards and second labour contractions much stronger and effective.

Second labours' often very different kettle of fish, I believe.

ninja · 02/05/2010 21:56

me too - a relatively quick home delivery 2nd time - they wouldn't even let me have gas and air until 5 mins before the end as they didn't believe I was so far along.

MaisietheMorningsideCat · 02/05/2010 21:59

Yes, ventouse here (on gas and air - ouch) followed by 2 normal and very fast deliveries.

pinkmagic1 · 02/05/2010 22:03

Yes, awful 50 hour labour, followed by failed ventouse and then forceps with first. 5 1/2 hours from first contraction until lovely natural, drug free 2nd birth.

Barmymummy · 03/05/2010 08:41

Yes me too! Had dreadful long labour with DD due to pre-eclampsia etc but ended up in emergency ventouse etc. Dreadful experience and I was very scared when pregnant with no2. Anyway, he arrived 2 hours after getting to hospital and it was the most 'normal' straight forward birth I could have hoped for You will be fine, don't worry

biggest · 03/05/2010 09:51

These stories are so reassuring! As I approach number 2 delivery I so worried about it turning into the intervention fest that number 1 was!
Did any of the second timers have different birth plans/approaches second time round - like no epidural, moving around more, different birthing position?
I am being monitored for bp this time and I want to give myself every chance of a straightforward birth

thisisyesterday · 03/05/2010 10:20

yes, definitely took a different approach

with my first i was very unprepared. hadn't even taken any ante-natal classes. i figured the MW would just tell me what to do lol
i found the pain hard to cope with which meant i had a lot of pain relief which meant i ended up on a drip and lying on my back. ds was at an awkward angle, which if I had been upright he may have found it easier to turn... that's why i ended up with the ventouse

with my second i read up a lot on positive thinking, specifically how to cope with the pain. breathing techniques, visualisation etc etc

i had a homebirth, so obv i knew if i had pain relief if wold be limited to gas and air anyway, which is partly why i wanted to be extra prepared.
labour was straightforward. I found that by listneing to my body i wanted to stay upright, and i gave birth kneeling over the sofa, which the MW said afterwards is a really good position to be in. Baby was op, but came out just fine with no pain relief.

PanicMode · 03/05/2010 15:30

Yes - I had a hugely long, very medicalised intervention ridden first labour, culminating in an episiotomy and last ditch effort at a ventouse delivery prior to a CS. It was so hideous that we planned a small gap so that I wouldn't think about how awful it was and not want to do it again - my subsequent three labours have been very quick and I haven't had time for any pain relief at all (not even a paracetamol!), so take heart!

CURLYMAMMA · 03/05/2010 15:47

yes me, ventouse for first and no intervention for second.

mylovelymonster · 03/05/2010 20:06

Preparation for delivery number 2 - absolutely none, apart from drank raspberry leaf tea after 37 weeks. Also, was really disappointed with community MW contact - saw a different person every time, so told requested my GP to refer me to a midwife-led birthing unit - Rosie in Cambridge - anyone else been there? - which was 25 miles away but was hopeful of time to get there!
(First time tried for a home birth but got transferred to grotty local hospital and experience was not positive).
So, accepted at BU (bless them), and when time came sped to Cambridge tearing car seats apart, arrived early Sunday morning (November) to be greeted by three lovely MWs, taken into birthing suite with special couch and interesting upright wedge cushion, waters broke with a pop and DD2 delivered beautifully half an hour later. One MW with me throughout and a second bringing me cold energy drinks. I used a TENS as well - full throttle. I found TENS very useful both times.

So - position - front up against pillow on wedge thingy - sort of kneeling up against it, so was able to pull down on corners and bear down through pelvis really well while taking gas & air (8lb10oz!! and I am slim of pelvis).

I had no birth plan as the first time taught me that you play it as it comes. Plus, entrusted myself fully to the MWs, knowing that should anything go awry this time I would be a floor away from the consultant led unit.

After first time, I was VERY anxious about delivery and had no idea how it would go. It helped enormously that:
I trusted the MWs that were looking after me in labour
It was a very relaxed environment - air of calm and professionalism. Was a quiet birthing morning - lucky for me as they'd had a rush during the night.
I knew that all the bases would be covered should we need medical help.
So - I was much more relaxed and calm.
