31 wks - anyone else feeling REALLY fat, tired and sad?

Last May I was a slim UK size 12. I've just been into Gap maternity and have had to shift up to their UK size 16 in trousers. I've still got 9 weeks to go.

I'm feeling really heavy and tired, and having had a brilliant second semester emotionally, now feel down and a bit like giving up on everything.

Just having a moan really -- but I'd feel less alone and really appreciate it if anyone else wanted to share.

I wanted to answer though I'm not pg at the moment, but was recently. I was huge - and although I don't have a problem with accepting that you gain weight when pg, it did start to get me down from about 30 weeks onwards, and sometimes thought I just couldn't bear it. Is it your first? The 3rd trimester can really be exhausting and you can put weight on everywhere - but often it's partly water retention and will disappear quite quickly.

If it is your first, rest, sleep and treat yourself now while you still can.

beanlet · 30/04/2010 14:47

Yes, it's my first, and I'm still pretty active walking everywhere and swimming three times a week. TBH I'm not sure I can bear the idea of getting even more enormous (although I know I will) my feet are already starting to ache from dragging my weight around.

Any suggestions for restricting the weight gain to baby and water retention?

oh god, I know how you feel, this is my 2nd pregnancy and I just seem to get huge when I'm pregnant! First pregnancy I went from being a size 10/12 to having to buy size large maternity tops in H&M, I was so depressed. People kept telling me how big I was, when I put pregnant pics on facebook friends said they didn't recognise me

This time round I haven't put on quite as much weight but still decided to torture myself by putting on my old size 12 jeans just to see how long it might be til I can get in them again - couldn't get them past my thighs, why did I bother?!

The good thing is the end is in sight, and you won't be this way forever! After baby no.1 it took about a year to get back to my pre-pregnancy weight, and that was without doing much in the way of exercise or diet really. Best thing to do is just give in to the tents/hideous pants, eat chocolate and generally do whatever cheers you up!

MarineIguana · 30/04/2010 14:53

I think every woman's body responds in its own way so it's hard to control this, apart from of course eating healthily.

I was constantly being told how big I was and that I'd never make it to my due date. I didn't! - baby was a week early. So at least that was a week less of being enormous than I expected

Twittle · 30/04/2010 15:06

I'm with you all on this getting larger thing! I am 27 weeks and started off as a size 10/12 by the time I was 6 weeks I couldn't get my normal jeans on not because of a bump but because my pelvis thought it fun to spread early on (I am hoping this will make for an easier labour....... it's my first so I'm trying to be optomistic....)! My boobs grew horrendously until about 17 weeks and then thankfully stopped and now my bump is growing! I am in size 14 trousers from New Look but am only 27 weeks and really worried about the fact that in another couple of months I won't be able to get into any clothes...... Bean like you I am exercising - walking up to 5 miles 5 days a week and swimming twice a week and I eat pretty healthily (although gave into chocolate last night)! I accept that I am going to be big and of course don't mind as long as my baby is healthy but on the other hand I really really don't want to look grotesque and worry that I won't be able to return to normal after I've had the baby will my bones go back to where they started off???? - I have never been naturally slim and have always had to work hard at it! Anyway rant over - and feeling much better and am just going to get excited about starting to think about sorting things out for my baby, oh and one good thing is that at least now as my bump grows it doesn't mind my boobs look quite so scarily large!!

vicbar · 30/04/2010 21:58

BEANLET - Iwouldnt try to restrict anything enjoy all things in moderation you never get the 1st pregnancy back - being able to rest when on mat leave and mooch around eating choccie so enjoy it whilst you can.

Im soo fed up too. I was a fit and healthy size 8 before this pregnancy (no 4) and Im now 28 weeks and in H&M size 16 or L maternity jeans. My boobs are out of control currently a 34 EE but only because I really cant be bothered to go and buy bigger bra's that will fit.

Im eating more than normal but I think the biggest thing with me is I cant run anymore, Ive suffered SPD in 2 of the 3 previous pregnancies and it is back with a vengence.

I have truly never felt so unattractive for some reason I feel so much worse about it than with any of the others .
A family wedding in 4weeks is also bothering me (who is that blimp her friends will ask)

Thought I better add a positive (for you 1st timers) I put on 5 stone with my 1st, she was 9lb 12oz but still a ridiculous amount to gain. By the time she was 4 months old I was back in a size 10 (although your body is never the same - sorry) and all I did was walk with her and eat sensibly. BTW my sensible eating still involved a family size bag of malteasers a day.

We'll all get back to our previous gorgeousness Im sure [hope]
x

I feel exactly the same! Am 31 weeks and was a size ten. I bought a size 16 dress yesterday nothing looks good on me and I have a family do this wkend and quite frankly may wear a pop up tent at this rate. Feel huge though all out front making my twiggy arms and legs even more comical. Keep seeing all these little cute sun dresses and i cant wear any of them. Being pregnant more than makes up for it and i couldnt be happier but will admit having a couple of down days at the moment. Luckily we vent on here as im sure as hell not admitting my boobs are now an F to anyone in RL.

RubyReins · 01/05/2010 21:11

\ (that's me trying to stick my hand up btw...). I'm 32 weeks and feeling a bit low too. Very weepy which isn't like me at all and feeling fat and frumpy. I spend weekends dossing about in DH's hoodies - oh so flattering! Skin has gone to pot too. I guess I've been lucky in that I am all bump, I've put quite a lot of weight on but it's all on my front so I'm getting by with bump bands on top of my trousers etc. Still vast though and I get a lot of comments about "how many I have in there" etc. Never get tired of that...

I felt fantastic in the second trimester but now I'm all achy and tired. Still, the end is in sight for us all!

babydeckchairs · 01/05/2010 21:44

I'm 31 weeks too, have put on tons of weight and am getting very tired. I have cellulite down to my knees and several chins that aren't normally there, and keep having to buy bigger and bigger maternity jeans (now I'm up to size 16).

I'm finding it helpful to try to remember the positives - my hair is thick and shiny, my skin is much clearer than normal, and I haven't had any health scares or anything to worry about.

I also spent two hours in the hairdresser's today getting a cut and colour and eyebrow wax, which went a long way to making me feel better! Spend some of your £190 health in pregnancy grant on getting pampered it'll make you feel 100% better!

Cheer up, not long to go now and then you'll meet your baby and it'll all seem worthwhile!

NorkyButNice · 01/05/2010 21:49

[joining the miserable pregnant club]

I'm 29+4 and measuring 34 weeks - SPD thrown in for good measure. Can't believe I could have another 10 weeks of growing to do!

At least we'll all have a nice summer to look forward to with our big babies

beanlet · 02/05/2010 11:44

Oh yes, the cellulite down to the knees. I have never in my life had cellulite before; my DH (lectures in developmental biology) says it's "maternal reserves" of fat building up in case neanderthal me enters a famine zone and baby needs to use it. It's still VERY ugly.

Norky, my bump is measuring big too -- almost 3 inches above average for time.

However, I am feeling slightly better today. I have a big interview in a few weeks time and had to buy an expensive dress from Isabella Oliver -- and it makes me look amazing and even gives me a waist! (well, sort of).

Deckchairs, haircut sounds like a great idea. I'm going to book myself in

I'm 38 weeks tomorrow. Feel and look hideous. Started off a reasonably toned size 8, now a good 2.5 - 2.75 stone heavier. Too scared to actually look the past couple of weeks incase the scales collape under me. Even worse now that my bump has dropped as it hangs even further below my tops like a hideous beer gut. I definitely second the pampering though - haircut last week and the 2 days after I felt great, til I washed it and had no energy to bother doing it nicely myself mind! But hey, the end is now in sight...

FlowerBee · 02/05/2010 17:52

Hi There, Am also 31 weeks and feel ginormous! The worst thing is lugging all the extra weight around - it's so physically exhausting and uncomfortable and i'm so clumbsy! This must be what obese people feel like every day!

I can't wait to give birth to get rid of some of this weight (and of course meet babs).

To try and keep positive i go gardening whenever i can (the sight of seeds germinating, and harvesting my own salad thrills me no end!), have started packing my hospital bag and getting ready for baby (have a big bump, bum and thighs, maybe baby will be early but not too bad elsewhere), and just revel in the fact i can eat chocolate biscuits with less of a guilty conscience. It's not as if it'll make much difference to how huge i am now so might as well make the most of the opportunity!!

Having your hair done is also a good idea. Also have you thought about buying urself a nice maternity nighty? Its nice when something actually fits properly.

6months and was told at a party last night that i looked 8 months! Cheers!!!
By the way Hennes maternity trousers are tiny. I struggled to fit into size 20 , went to Dorothy Perkins and am in size 16 which are quite loose.

Twittle · 04/05/2010 16:17

It probably isn't funny (perhaps I have really lost it and am now hysterical) but reading all of our comments does make me smile! At least we are all in the same boat with the way we are feeling and we all have at least one thing in common, we're getting bigger by the minute and are likely to continue to do so until D-Day! I'm with FlowerBee and I think I might just give in and go and buy that packet of chocolate hobnobs! Luckily it will be the Summer when we have our babies and so we can get out and walk once they arrive - if it was the Winter I have a feeling I might have just sunk into the sofa with the fire going and treated myself to hot chocolates and more biscuits while the baby screams sleeps and get even larger!!!
