18 weeks and not felt the baby yet...

I am 18+2 and have still not felt the baby. This is my first.

At least, I think I haven't felt it yet - there have been a couple of odd occasions where I have though "maybe"? but it could just be wind or something I think!

Is this ok? Shouldn't I be feeling it by about now...?

Maybe I am feeling it and I don't know what it is I am feeling yet..? (clutching at straws..)

I didn't feel anything until I was about 21 weeks, even then it was like a butterfly feeling in my tummy and I only ever noticed just before I went to sleep !

Don't worry

didn't feel my first till nearly 24 weeks and my cousin was the same so i wouldn't worry about it, you will feel it soon enough and then it won't leave you alone!!!!

ShowOfHands · 28/04/2010 12:52

Oh it's early yet! Totally normal. You may find you have an anterior placenta too that cushions what you feel at first.

Most first timers don't feel anything until post 20 weeks.

Lizwah · 28/04/2010 13:22

Hi,

I'm 17+2 and I'm exactly the same. Its so frustrating because I'm desparate to feel something too! I keep lying awake keeping really really still to see if I can feel anything, but I think I'm just imagining anything that I think I might feel. I'm sure it'll happen, we just have to be patient!

legallyblond · 28/04/2010 14:21

Thanks guys - I guess this is just another irrational worry to cross off the list!! Plus the run up to a scan (20 week scan in just under 2 weeks) is always a bit scary, isn't it?

Thanks again for the reassurances!

I am currently pregnant with my first, (now 22 weeks) and didn't feel anything until 20 weeks, my feelings of anxiety were made worse by everybody asking me 'have you felt the baby move yet?'... try not to worry, when I spoke to my midwife at my 20 week scan she said it is usual not to feel anything until up to 26 weeks with a first pregnancy.

legallyblond · 28/04/2010 14:58

I know! I get asked every day if I am feeling it kick! Arrrgh! And my mother in law assures me that she felt her first at 15 weeks and that that is normal !

I didn't feel anything until about 20 weeks with my first. With my second I didn't really feel anything until about 22 weeks - she was really low down in my pelvis (which I knew from the scan when the sonographer struggled to get the measurements she needed and from the mw struggling to listen in to hb)

tvfriend · 28/04/2010 15:26

Didn't feel anything with my first until about 22 weeks- I had an anterior placenta. felt the second a bit earlier but not much.

Twittle · 28/04/2010 15:41

Don't worry I am having my first and was also worried that I couldn't feel anything at 17, 18, 19 + weeks in fact although I may have had flutterings it was probably about 24 weeks that I really started to feel something that resembled being kicked.... I am now 27 weeks and have lots more movement but not an excessive amount! Try not to worry you'll feel them soon enough honestly!!!

Missus84 · 28/04/2010 15:45

I didn't feel anything til 20 weeks, and nothing that was definite kicking til about 22 weeks. Also found out at the scan that I have an anterior placenta which apparently muffles the kicks a bit.

mummytosquidgies · 28/04/2010 21:22

With my first I felt him really early (about 16 weeks I think) so assumed I'd feel the same with this one. Not so!

I think I was 19 weeks when I was sure it wasn't just gas , 20 week scan showed anterior placenta which can mean you don't feel them, with my first I had placenta praevia so it wasn't in the way for feeling kicks!

18 weeks is nothing to worry about though, honestly. My Dr and midwife have both said anything up to 24 weeks is normal. It will come, I'm 23 weeks now and I'm definitely not in doubt!

Ozziegirly · 29/04/2010 02:37

I didn't feel anything until 21/22 weeks - but now at 23 weeks I can feel loads of movements all the time, and even DH can feel them from the outside. So it's amazing what can change so quickly.

I have an anterior placenta as well which cushions it.

ellabella2 · 29/04/2010 17:28

Ooh, this is just the thread I needed to read, thank you everyone . I'm not quite 17 weeks and have an anterior placenta so not expecting to feel anything for quite a few weeks yet. It really doesn't help when lots of people keep asking 'have you felt it moving yet?' does it.

Feeling reassured x

Antidote · 29/04/2010 18:08

Phew! Me to: 17 weeks today & unconvinced that I'm feeling anything except wind .

GreenwichB · 30/04/2010 23:23

Anterior too - didn't feel anything much until about 23 weeks. 27 weeks now and dealing with some sharp elbows or foot in the ribs frequently so plenty of time

Get the odd twanging sensation too - like a stringed instrument being plucked. V bizarre sensation - suddenly occurred that maybe it's playing with the umbilical cord. Can't imagine that your MIL felt a thing at 15 weeks - it must have been the size of a small orange. Mine has been telling me all kinds of rubbish.

Honeybee79 · 01/05/2010 09:51

Hi there. I am nearly 18 weeks and exactly the same. Midwife told me at 16 week appointment that 20 weeks plus would probably be when I felt something. No bump yet either - also apparently normal for a first pregnancy!

GirlWiththeMouseyHair · 01/05/2010 13:17

I didn't feel DS til 21weeks, but everyone pregnant at the same time as me seemed to feel theirs aaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaages before me!

goodlifemummy · 04/05/2010 14:47

I felt first kicks at 15 weeks last time, but I had twins, so this post has reassured me that it may not be so early this time round (am almost 7 weeks!) - I'm sure I would have been panicking otherwise!! Never even thought about it, so thank you!!

bumpology · 04/05/2010 17:21

I'm 23 weeks gone, and though I've been feeling something for a few weeks, it's only this week that I'd describe it as the "popping" sensation that others describe. Before that it was more like a slightly uncomfortable shifting feeling, and I wasn't sure if it was gas, or movement.

On a slight tangent, I had this amazing scan done last week, that shows just how much babies move about in there - and we hardly feel any of it!

Oh, and I have an anterior plascenta too, which might explain some of it
