Has anyone else suffered or is anyone suffering with this? Im 27+1 and have been suffering with it for the last week or so and its driving me nuts!! I am so tired but am having real trouble getting to sleep because my legs are so restless, achey and jumpy! I was wondering if anyone had any advice on how to treat this or minimize it. Or if anyone just wants to have a moan so I know im not the only one! lol. Thanks to all replies

Sympathies... I posted a few weeks ago about this, I'm 38 weeks now and have good and bad days. I also get it in my arms and get stupidly restless, it's horrible.

I have definitely found that it's worse when I drink caffeine (even just the odd cup of milky coffee which is what I was having). Or eat chocolate.

I bought one of those giant long cushions from ebay and it helps me in bed, not sure why but I wrap it round my legs a bit and it seems to work.

Aside from that, I make sure I'm completely knckered before I go to bed otherwise I just end up frustrated and annoyed.

If you see your GP they might be able to help.

I find that wine and/or chocolate bring it on. Have you made any connections with diet? I think it is lack of potassium-(I have a feeling I read it somewhere).

When mine gets really bad and i am about to burst into tears (takes a lot for me to cry) i give in and have 2 paracetamol which helps enourmously

I had this and I'm not pregnant but it was awful, I just wanted to walk around in the night.

Someone told me it was due to a lack of potassium and/or iron, and I had been on a diet for weeks when it started, so that kind of made sense. Anyway I started taking a supplement which had both in and have not looked back.

yes! i'm 36 weeks and i get it every night, it gets worse if my mind is on it, or my feet get hot and i find myself crying over it i did have it before pregnancy but was nothing i lost sleep over, now its awful! and i get no sleep because of it..

A shower or bath straight before bed can also help.

I developed restless leg during/after menopause and have had it ever since. I now get up immediately it starts and walk for ten minutes (maybe do the dishes, fold washing) then back to bed. This sometimes works. Now that I am retired, I realise that I can sleep in the day time (Restless Leg occurs mainly between 7pm and 7am) so often stay up until 4am and then sleep like a log until 11am. If I have to be up early I try to get a siesta between 2 and 4pm. This could help once you are on Maternity leave. One of my DDs was badly affected during both pregnancies and survived by turning night into day as best she could.

I had 2 and a bit weeks in Canada a few years ago and due to the time difference my legs & arm jumped about in the day time when I was walking about anyway and I slept well every night. However, after 2 weeks my time clock seemed to readjust and it was as bad as ever. Flight home was a nightmare, I 'walked' all the way across the Atlantic.

I put hot water bottles on my legs, this seems to help a bit.

nowherewoman · 28/04/2010 16:10

I had this, it's so awful isn't it?

I got some pregnancy multi vits and it was gone in a couple of days.

Don't know what I was lacking but it was clearly in those little pills!

gems12345 · 28/04/2010 19:12

Thanks for all your advice everyone. Im seeing my midwife in 2 weeks for a blood test to check my iron level so I will mention it to her then and see if she can reccomend any pregnancy multi vitamins. I used to get it before pregnancy, not very often, but when I did I used to take ibuprofen and it worked straight away, cant do that now though. I have been having chocolate and a weak coffee before bed, I should try and stop that, although it will be difficult! I have also been in tears with this at times! Been absolutley exhausted but just cannot relax and sleep, its awful! If its not restless legs its cramp or needing to get up for a wee! Must be my body preparing me for the sleepless nights once the baby is here! Thanks again everyone.
