Possible hand infection - do I need to see the Dr?

Sorry if this isn't the best place to post this but... this weekend I was doing a bit of gardening and stabbed my finger with a pretty large rose thorn. Didn't really bleed much or anything and I just cleaned it up and carried on. Anyway, over the course of the day have notice half of my finger has now turned a purple/red colour and seems to be gradually getting worse. Usually I would just keep an eye on it for a few days/put cream on it etc but am now not sure if I should see the Dr as I know the immune system can behave differently during pregnancy and not sure if its the start of an infection, or if I'm just being paranoid. Its not swollen and doesn't hurt. I'm 25 weeks BTW. Any thoughts appreciated!

I would go to the docs if it was me, a rose thorn prick shouldnt really make half your finger turn purple.

No harm in going to the docs

Jesus I would be thinking septicaemia

sorry I don't meant o panic you. But no, it should NOT be purple. Tetanus, blood poisoning, etc can do that and is v common from a puncture wound.

PLEASE go to A&E tonight and get it seen to, you do not want to wake up tomorrow with a serious condition.

My brother had a finger that went like this - he had to have surgery and was lucky he got it seen in time. Please do get it seen to tonight, the sooner the better.

NOODLEY please can you confirm that you have read our posts?!

we are really worried about your finger, and you as a kind of extra

Seriously, don't mess about with this, it's serious and it needs sorting out NOW.

uggmum · 27/04/2010 20:27

You really must go and get it checked out. My dd had an infection on the back of her hand and it spread up her arm. She ended up having an emergency op. All fine now though. Don't want to alarm you but you must get this looked at.
Last year I was very ill with septicaemia, it has been a 5 month recovery, I wouldn't recommend it to anyone.

cardamomginger · 27/04/2010 20:42

Yes - please go to A&E now! Tonight! Immediately!!

DesperateHousewife21 · 27/04/2010 20:57

Maybe she has gone to A&E...

Let us know how your doing noodley

noodleysoup · 27/04/2010 21:07

Yikes! Thanks all, off to get it checked out now. Will let you know the verdict.

Glad to hear that you're getting it checked out. I hope it's all ok.

I was bitten on the hand by a dog. I didn't think much of it, but went to the doctor because I was due a tetanus.

The doctor was very glad to have seen me because they really don't like to take any chances with hands. Hands are obviously very important to us, but medically very complicated - so better safe than sorry.

DesperateHousewife21 · 27/04/2010 21:43

Good luck

noodleysoup · 28/04/2010 08:55

Luckily nothing too serious in the end, no sign of an infection which is a big relief after reading some of the experiences above. Seems that the the small puncture wound from the rose thorn is still bleeding/leaking a bit under the skin causing the rather dramatic coloured effects and moving my finger when typing etc is preventing it from healing, which is why it was getting worse (so typing this with one hand!). Just have to keep it strapped for a few days. Thanks again everyone, even though it didn't turn out to be anything bad in the the end getting checked did save me a night of worry!

What a relief!!! Sorry if we all freaked you out a bit - but better to be safe than sorry!

Haliborange · 28/04/2010 09:49

Are you up to date with your tetanus shots? I did the same when I was pregnant and it turned out I hadn't been fully vaccinated, so had to have a shot then. Better safe than sorry etc.

DesperateHousewife21 · 28/04/2010 17:20

Glad its not too serious noodley, always better to get these things checked out.

Good luck with the rest of your pregnancy

OmicronPersei8 · 28/04/2010 19:44

I'm glad it wasn't anything too serious. I hope it all heals up nice and quickly. I hope you're using this as an excuse to boss everyone else around to wait on you hand and foot! Never a bad thing, ime.
