Possibly one of the weirdest topics you?ve read. Last night I was making cottage pie and whilst cooking the mince I couldn?t get it out of my head that the mince looked wrong! At first I thought it looked like a brain and had to leave the kitchen for a few minutes to pull myself together. When I returned I then got it into my head that the mince was actually a pan of worms. Once the food was cooked and covered in mash it was fine (plus I was actually quite hungry at that point).

Through out my pregnancy I haven?t really suffered from any smells or tastes affecting me, but now it seems I can?t stand the way things look. I think I?m quite a sane person, has anyone else had a similar experience in pregnancy, or should I be checking myself in to the local psychiatric hospital?

Hi nessmay
I too would say I'm quite a sane person but did have an odd reaction when I was cooking mince and couldn't stand the cooked smell of it, it was so strong when before I was pregnant, I loved the smell of meat cooking! I've also gone off the smell and taste of chicken and bacon!
How many weeks are you?

Interesting! Do you do sensory interchange sometimes, like see smells or other things as colours? It has a name, let me go and find out...

synaesthesia, that's it.

Hi dolphina78, I'm 28 weeks. The strange thing is it's not the smell, that didn't bother me at all. I wonder if I have always some weird phobia or dislike (that has now been exaggeraed due to pregnancy) of stringy things (take all sorts!). Someone at work mentioned they have a phobia of things with holes in them (like sponge or coral) and they once had a panic attack in a cafe because they'd ordered an omlette and they could see lots of air bubbles in it.

Come to think of it things like maggots and worms do make my skin crawl (if there are lots together). I am not at all squeamish about most things

Hi nessmay,
That does sound a bit odd in my opinion but your body is in overdrive at the moment with tons of hormones so anything's possible?!

Things started bothering me that I would never of thought of, like DH not putting the lid properly back on the sugar pot etc! It was really important to me at the time that he did it right and I am rather a laid back placid person!

I also found I couldn't have any air fresheners on or my smelly candles that I love. Anything nice smelling turned my stomach and even now one candle can still put me off when usually I can't get enough of smelling it (smells like cookies!)

I am sure all this happened around the same stage as you too!

I don't think I would worry too much about it, as long as baby is moving etc!
