I have just got back from the States, due to the volcano I was delayed by a week and missed my initial blood tests and nuchal scan. I am at 13 weeks and aged 33. I have now had my bloods and have tried to re-book my scan but there is nothing this short notice. I went to a GP (not my usual) and found him most unreassuring. He has requested a booking for a dating scan and says I have missed my nuchal. When I asked if this was a concern he just said 'yes your 33'?
I also experienced some bleeding whilst away and actually jumped to the conclusion i had miscarried. I have since taken two tests at different times both say pregnant and I still feel pregnant but for peace of mind I feel I need a scan. The GP's reassuring words were 'well bleeding is serious if your rhesus negative and you don't know your bloodgroup' .
I am calling my midwife tomorrow for her advice which i hope will be better. Now I am really concerned about missing the nucal and not sure I want to risk an amnio test.

Sorry for waffling on...

Does anyone have some words of wisdom?

Much appreciated.
Xx

If you really can't get the hospital to give you an appt in th enext few days, you can get private nuchal scans done - think normally for around £100-150? I think from memory that they can only be done accurately up to 13weeks+6 days, so if you want one you need to get it booked asap. Hopefully your midwife might be able to get you in for one at the hospital this week. I don't think 33 years is something to fret about but if it were me, I'd want the scan for reassurance if nothing else.

Why don't you just pay for a nuchal fold scan? My health authority don't do them anyway. Paid 190 pounds for bloods and scan that was very thorough and also dated pregnancy. I am 32 and the risks are not enormous (1 in 700 I think) but you need a scan because of the bleeding. My risk was very low and was very re-assured. Best 190 quid I ever spent.

Go for a private scan. It will ease your mind. FWIW, I missed both of mine - was 22Weeks PG with DS and 18weeks with DD before I knew I was PG.

In both cases, I went for private scans - and all was good.

I hope it all goes well for you x

Hello, can understand why you are worried esp after seeing an unhelpful GP. I wasn't offered a nuchal scan but had blood tests at 16 weeks and when they came back at high risk I was really worried. We have been to Fetal Care Unit today and they were so helpful, if you don't want the amnio test they can look for further signs at the 20 week scan.

As I understand it both the nuchal test and blood test give you a risk factor but neither actully tell you if your baby is affected, I didn't find the blood test result very helpful.

I would ring your hospital and ask to speak to someone in the Fetal Care Unit, in my experiance they are much more helpful than my midwife and GP.

Hope this helps a little bit.

Where do you live that you get offered both dating and nuchal scans? [jealous] I had to go private for my nuchal one aged 37, and then the NHS cancelled the dating one as being surplus to requirements as the date from my private one would do just fine, thank you very much for saving them some money!

If you don't want amnio, then the triple blood test at about 17 weeks also gives you a relative risk factor.

Also on the Rhesus Negative point you should ask if you need an Anti-D injection now if you have had bleeding. They can do a blood test which shows if you have produced antibodies and therefore if you need the injection. You would have the injection(s) at around 28 weeks anyway.

Thanks for all your feed back. I have now booked in for the triple blood test at 16weeks which has eased my mind a bit. Think I might check out the Fetal care unit also. Hiopefully all will be well
