I've just done a test and I'm pregnant with my 3rd. I have 2 dd's who will be 4 and 2. I work full time on shifts and wasn't really planning a 3rd yet ! I know I should be happy (and I'm sure I will be when I get used to the idea) but have so many issues to consider.

I've been preclamptic with both my dd's so am nervous of that (lucky to have both as missed by midwife and hospital until I went into labour with both, despite supposed monitoring), had dd2 by VBAEmCS but ended up with episiotomy so ALREADY panicking ! Both were tiny babies even at full term. Think I could be anything from 5 to 9 weeks. Really wasn't ready for this !!

How on earth do you cope with 3 under age 5yrs ?

How do you get 3 car seats inyour car ? Etc etc ?

Any reassurance would be great.

Sorry its a bit rambling, must have caught head up arse syndrome too !

Ps I'm not new, I've namechanged as not telling anyone in RL or work yet.

Hi there shocknews

I'm in a similar position to you being that I have a dd who is 5 and a ds who will be 4 when this little one arrives in July.

I honestly am still trying to answer some of the questions you have raised - in particular the car seats one. I could yell as I drive a fiat grande punto and there really isn't all that much space in there.

I try not to think about how on earth I'm going to cope with 3 children - but only because I know that somehow I will. I have to - although that might sound really crap, I find it quite reassuring

As long as you have support around you from your dh and/or family - I'm sure you'll be fine.

This baby was very much planned for us and I'm still in denial about it all trying to organise everything.

You'll be fine - I know it's daunting tho.

Thanks cherry, I am sure I will cope I'm just a bit of a perfectionist and like planning, so although this isn't really a disaster it feels that way as was definitely unplanned !

Good luck cherry, keep us updated how you cope (only good things though !)

Any solutions re car seats and bedrooms would be good sooner rather than later !!

shock i had pre-eclampsia twice and was terrified for dc3... consultant told me 1 in 3 chance of getting it again and it never happened this time! So i now feel more confident for dc4 without stressing about pre eclapsia!
how many bedrooms do you have?
we had to get new car, now have renault scenic with 3 in back ok. tbh not a major problem as we rarely all 5 of us drive around together for any distance so I can have dd (age 5) in the front and the other 2 in the back for a bit more space!
good luck

LooL00 · 26/04/2010 15:24

Hi shocknews it took me a bit of time to get used to being pg with dc3 but now I'm fine with it. I have ds5 and dd3(will be 4 when dc3 arrives in july) same as cherrypie
Our family car is a citroen saxo!DH has a bbigger work car but i can't drive it so if we all 5 go out together we'll have to move the carseats and he'll have to drive.Dc3 is going to have to ride in the front in the saxo(no airbag).

I think we'll all be fine.

CherryPie3 · 26/04/2010 15:24

Still working on the carseats as you know - when I have a solution I will let you know!!

With bedrooms - we live in a 3bed terrace so we don't have a spare bedroom - but because dd and ds each have their own rooms we have warned them that when baby grows a little bit - one of them may need to share a room. DD currently has the biggest room (apart from ours) so we explained to her that if the baby is a boy (we didn't find out) then she will need to move into ds's room.

DS is quite openly hoping for a brother so he can have the biggest bedroom

LooL00 · 26/04/2010 15:26

ds and dd really want to share a room so sooner or later we'll put them in together and have baby in with us for 6 months.

LooL00 · 26/04/2010 15:28

ps there is a very expensive carseat solution called a multimac(do a MN search) but it costs more than the value of our car!

TulipsInTheSunshine · 26/04/2010 15:32

congratulations

3 under 5 is manageable, my eldest had her 4th birthday 2.5 weeks before my youngest was born and we muddle along fairly well (although i am looking forward to the days i stop bf-ing and have my body back for the first time in 6+ years and when i finally change my last nappy )

carseats are trickier.... we can just about squeeze three into our ford focus estate but it's fiddly, and dps car is a no go with all of us.

my friend had awful pregnacies and birth with her first two but flew it with her third so you never know, you could be like her

good luck with it all!

Mummy1868 · 26/04/2010 16:30

I am in my 12th week and in a very similar state of shock.
my DD's will be 5 and 2 when this one is born.
We were half heartedly trying and then changed our minds - we were going to leave it for a couple of years!!
Why does it happen when you are not trying very hard!
I am just hoping that there is only 1 in there as to have twins would be too scary.

Meglet · 26/04/2010 16:34

Congrats!

I think the Citroen picasso / xsara should fit 3 seats in the back.

Insanitybecomesme · 26/04/2010 16:40

congratulations

three under 5 is fine, I have 12wk twins,2yr old and a 3yr old, (not to mention an 8&9yr old) and so far I am no more insane than I was before children

ASecretLemonadeDrinker · 26/04/2010 16:47

I am in the same situation - I have a (just) 4 year old and a 20 month old and no.3 is due in June No words of wisdom I am afraid, but WRT the carseats we have a ford mondeo and fit in a bulky baby seat, a bulky toddler seat and a basic booster so it should be able to take a high back booster instead of the basic we tried.

Re your births, I had an emergency CS with DD1, a VBAC with episiotomy and second degree tear with DD2, then had an abso-fuckin-lootely marvellous (induced!) birth with DD3. 'Twas by far and away the best of the three. Had a couple of small stitches, but only where the scar tissue from DD2 wouldn't stretch far enough.

And I had 3 under 5 then too - it's a breeze

oldmum42 · 26/04/2010 17:15

Hi Shocknews,

Congratulations!

Two tiny babies at full term and the pre-clampsia might suggest that the placenta wasn't working so well throught all or most of the pregnancies.

A friend was on an asprin-type drug throught her recent pregnancy to "keep things moving in the placenta". Normally I think asprin is what they use to thin the blood a little, but my friend is alergic to it, so they used a similar drug instead (I think it was called Fragmin).

I'm almost 13 weeks now, I have also been put on low dose asprin by my consultant as (at my age, 42) he said the risks of pre clampsia and other placenta related problems is much higher, and asprin can prevent these problems.

Is it worth getting an early as possible appointment to discuss our previous problems with a consultant? Not the MW! Maybe it's possible that early intervention could mean you are able to avoid the same types of problems this time round???

I had 3 under the age of 5 at one point, you do learn to cope, had an old 7 seater car (easier to get hold of 7 seaters now), as 3 car seats into back row of car doesn't really work.

Best wishes

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 26/04/2010 17:18

I had 3 under five, planned, 2VABC after ECS and it was fine. It is harder in some ways now they are older. We had to get a new car but that was fine and all 3 go along the middle row.

After this baby is born, sort out your contraception .

Take care.

What has your DH said?

msjayjay · 26/04/2010 17:37

its worth chacking out the law on baby seats. I remember when it was brought in there were exemptions for more than 2 children. I am not sure about the safety apect though.

Good Luck.

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 26/04/2010 17:46

What are you talking about mrsjayjay?

kando · 26/04/2010 17:53

I think what mrsjayjay is on about is that when the laws re car seats were ?upgraded, it said something along the lines of if you couldn't physically fit three carseats in the back then the eldest child didn't have to sit in one. Obviously age/height dependant, but I remember about it because we had that exact problem couldn't fit 3 in the back of our car. DD1 was 5 but very tall, dd2 was 3 (so no question of her going without a carseat) and dd3 was newborn, so dd1 sat in between the two carseats in the back. [Disclaimer: I don't know if this rule still applies!]

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 26/04/2010 17:55

I hope it doesn't apply.

We bought a new car. No way would I have a 4 year old in a car without a safety seat.

kando · 26/04/2010 18:05

Just copied and pasted this from "Safer Motoring":

There are some exceptions that allow children 3 years - 135cms tall to travel in the rear of a car using an adult seat belt. These are:

  • In a licensed taxi/private hire car if the right child restraint is not available
  • For genuine emergency situations over a short distance if the right child restraint is not available
  • Where two children already sitting in seats in the rear prevent a third seat fitting in.

Children under 3 years may also travel in the rear of a taxi unrestrained if no child restraint is available.

heather1980 · 26/04/2010 18:08

the rule does still apply.

Children over 3 and up to 135 cms in height or the age of 12 MUST use a child restraint, with very few exceptions. In the Front Seat

The child MUST use the correct child restraint.

In the Rear Seat

The child MUST use the correct restraint, where seat belts are fitted.

There are three exceptions where there is not a child seat available. In each case the child MUST use the adult belt instead. They are -

  1. in a licensed taxi or private hire vehicle;

  2. if the child is travelling on a short distance for reason of unexpected necessity;

3) if there are two occupied child restraints in the rear which prevent the fitment of a third.

In addition, a child 3 and over may travel unrestrained in the rear seat of a vehicle if seat belts are not available.

It is the driver's legal responsibility to ensure that the child is correctly restrained.

heather1980 · 26/04/2010 18:12

oh and congratulations i'm 21 weeks with dc3. when it's born i will have dd 3.11 and ds 1.11! i am shitting myself about how i will cope.
we too had a slip and found myself unexpectedly up the duff. i cried quite a lot when i found out as a 3rd wasn't in my plans, but it's done now!
i'm sure we will cope!

FabIsGoingToGetFit · 26/04/2010 18:22

How many cars don't have seat belts?

msjayjay · 26/04/2010 20:33

Yes I was on about the law but wasn't to sure what the ins and outs were and as I say the safety aspect. Thanks to the guys who posted the points of the law.

Probably not much help but you never know it may be worth knowing.
