I am starting to despair, I really don't know what to do. Before falling pregnant I kept losing hair, strands even, def way more than the normal 100 a day. Now that I am pregnant (4 mths) I have a thinning scalp which others have remarked upon. My hair and nails are weak and feel brittle and thin.

I am anaemic but taking extra strength prescription iro with folic acid and extra fish oil. I am eating healthily and exercise. What can I do? I am really, really scared I'll lose even more hair and I am getting more and more upset about it.

I live abroad and there are no trichologists here. The earliest I can see one is in July when I'm back in the UK. Any recommendations or advice much appreciated.

PS: This is my 2nd pregnancy and the hair I lost with my 1st has never come back. She's 19 mths now.

Bumping for you.

Hi

sorry to hear you're so upset! What you need is reassurance, this stress is bad for you and will worsen the situation.

Just about any woman will agree pregnancy often leads to thinner hair, as does getting a bit older. I am 35 and on my second pregnancy, my hair is about half as thick as it was in my twenties. I know how it feels to worry about hair loss. I have accepted that my hair is no longer very thick now.

Try not to let the worry get out of control. You are doing the right things with your supplements, diet and excercise. Soon you will see an expert who will tell you I'm sure that it's a temporary phase.

Thank you shiney, I appreciate your kind words. I didn't know others have experienced an overall losss, too. I must be surrounded by women with clip-on manes

I have seen my doctor today and she thinks it is definitely hormonal (menopausal symptoms) and said to take calcium now and a-Z vits and take hormones when I've delivered the baby. Other hair on my body has thinned, too. Which I was happy for.

Thanks for the bump peaceflower. Just freaking out and feeling not so great about it all. I mean who wants to lose hair? Sigh...

Hello kittyonthebeam,

I'm sorry to hear about your hair loss. That's very upsetting for you - it's the sort of thing that can be totally consuming, so try to push it out of your mind if you can, otherwise every lost strand gets scrutinised. I know!

I wouldn't bother going to a trichologist, if I were you. Your doctor is likely right - it does sound hormonal.

Given that I was told I was perimenopausal and had done some research, I thought I'd share this with you - I don't know what you're planning to do about HRT or hormone replacement after the pregnancy, or what your needs are - but there's a natural bio-identical hormone doctor in London who is really recommended. Her speciality is women's health and she works with women to create a special (not one size fits all) hormone package; and the hormones are from natural compounds - basically, from what I can summise it's about replacing what your body needs. Here's her link.

www.drmariongluck.com

If you google her, you'll find some good reviews - I know, from another website, a girl who went to her when she was menopausal and she really helped. She also does telephone consultations, which may be good for you if you're abroad. I don't think it's cheap-cheap, but i think the biggest cost is the initial blood tests.

Anyway, I was going to see her when i was recently diagnosed as perimenopausal. But then I got pregnant! So now I'll probably see her when (fingers crossed) the baby is here. But I've noticed a small hair shedding, and I've had shedding over the past two years, so I'm sure the hormone fluctations, at least in early pregnancy, don't always help.

Keep the faith - my sister has far thinner hair than me and she lost a lot for hormone reasons. You could see her scalp. She was prescribed the pill, I think, and iron and lots of other bits and pieces and it's definitely improved.

Good luck and try not to worry, which I know is easier said than done.
