Hi folks

This seems like a daft question to be asking, but first time mum-to-be - so be gentle!

My baby is due in Oct so I'm having a look around at various clothing basics to get.

So.. it'll be winter, so I want baby to be warm - does this mean long-sleeved vest under long-sleeved bodysuit? I can't help thinking that two long sleeves over each other would be uncomfortable for the LO... am I overthinking this??

Would welcome some advice from more experienced (or sensible ) mums!

sleeveless vest with poppers under the bum

DorotheaPlenticlew · 24/04/2010 10:45

Agreed, sleeveless popper vest under babygro or sleepsuit.

If you opt to use grobags at night, then the long-sleeved popper vests are useful to go under a bag. Also used them a lot under little soft dungarees etc, when the baby was a bit older.

It varies from baby to baby. DS2 has allways slept with 2 longsleeve layers often even cooler nights in summer. It doesnt seem uncomfortable, I suppose it depends on the tightness of the second layer. HTH

i had some of both longsleeve and short sleeve vests i don't think dd found them particularly uncomfortable but we did need longsleeve sometimes and vests don't have to be expensive

I used long-sleeved vests under either sleepsuits or pyjamas in the colder months when DS1 is in a sleeping bag, since his arms aren't covered. Just need to make sure the top layer isn't too tight. No problems with discomfort.

Now that it's getting warmer, he just sleeps in a long-sleeved vest in his bag - nice and comfy - legs and feet don't get too warm, and no bunching up.

Short sleeved vests (clearly underwear, usually sold in packs of 5 or 7, with envelope neck) under practically everything in spring/autumn/winter.

Bodysuits (slightly better quality looking with poppers at the neck, tend to come with outfits rather than buying separately) are reserved for under dresses/dungarees/short sleeved polo shirts.

Brilliant, thanks all. It's a new world of confusion shopping for baby clothes! (And I thought prams were bad enough..)

I've been wondering about this too - was just in Sainsbury's gazing at the baby clothes and wondering how on earth people know what to dress a baby in!

So my baby is due in July, I'm assuming it'll be quite warm in the hospital. Will I just be putting him or her into bodysuits (they're the things with feet and long sleeves, right?) with no vest underneath? Do babies wear vests pretty much all the time? I know they usually need one more layer than we do but I can't imagine in a hot hospital in summer needing two layers when there are blankets etc if necessary. I guess I'll need to buy a couple of packs of vests and a couple of packs of bodysuits.

I have no idea how many clothes to buy either - we don't know the sex so although I like neutral stuff there doesn't seem much point buying an awful lot before the baby comes. Plus how do you know what sizes to buy?

I agree with eh OP, it's a total minefield! Still got to decide on a pram as well!

BertieBotts · 24/04/2010 20:09

Emster I'd assume in July a baby would probably be ok in just a vest, as long as you made sure to keep them in the shade and perhaps out of the sun completely in the hottest part of the day.

sunshiney · 24/04/2010 20:10

hi Emster - yep a small baby should always have a vest - so my mother told me when she caught me NOT putting new born daughter in a vest.

agreed, not much point in buying tons of stuff before you need it, you might see clothes you like even more in the shops later down the line too.

BertieBotts · 24/04/2010 20:17

Well, it's up to you whether to put them in a vest or not! I got told off by an OOH GP when I took DS aged 5 months in with a temperature, it was similar weather to what we are having currently, I had dressed him in a vest (because for some reason I thought they had to wear vests!) and a sleepsuit (because I was paranoid about his arms and legs getting sunburnt) and the GP said "He's probably overheating because he's overdressed, he doesn't need a vest as well".

I would always put a tiny baby in a vest though if I was dressing him/her in an outfit or e.g. an embroidered sleepsuit, to protect their skin from irritation from seams etc.

Xavielli · 24/04/2010 20:26

I personally wouldn't do long sleeved vests.

I always had vest + Sleepsuit. Always a little hat outside when it's cold and just blankets in the buggy/car seat. In my experience it is easier to warm a baby up if they are a little chilly than cool them down if they are hot, so use thin layers and build them up til it's just right.
