am I putting on weight too quickly?

Hi,
Wondered if anyone could give me some advice. I am only 7 weeks pregnant but have already put on 4 pounds and clothes are feeling tight. I feel very fat and am worried that I will end up putting on too much weight.
Is this normal? Surely I shouldn't be starting to put weight on already? Should I be watching what I am eating?
Thanks

I can't speak for anyone else obviously, but in my current pregnancy which is number 2 I put most of my weight on in the first and second trimesters - I was gaining quite rapidly through most of that time due to staving off nausea and then huge appetite, and I must admit I started to be slightly concerned about how huge I'd end up by the end! But I'm now almost 36 weeks and have hardly gained anything in the last few weeks, my appetite has tailed right off, although bump is still growing nicely and measuring correctly for dates. In contrast, in my first pregnancy I put most of the weight on in the last trimester and not much at all early on.

I guess what I am saying is that in pregnancy weight gain seems to happen at different times for different people, and for different pregnancies - I think the guidelines about putting on x in first trimester and x in second etc create unnecessary worry - as long as you are being slightly sensible and not going really crazy I'd just go with your appetite, you will probably find there are peaks and troughs.

I've been worried about this too as I'm 9+2 now and have put on 5lbs already but as theslumbertaker said, the guidelines cause unneccesary worry so might be best to ignore them if you know in yourself that you're not going mad with the food and getting a bit of exercise.

I put on 4 lbs in the first 12 weeks and I wondered if that was a little bit too much - the guidelines suggest more like 2lbs. As the pp said, you might not gain much at different stages in your pregnancy.

On the other hand, guidelines or not, if you have put on 4lbs already, when the baby is still the size of a grain of rice, then perhaps it is a little bit too much. But depends on what you have been eating. If you don't feel you have been significantly overeating, then perhaps there is another reason and you should mention it to midwife? I wouldn't worry about clothes being tight, because bigger boobs and bloating will do that.

Hi angels - I'm 16 weeks and have put on 6 pounds so far...Most of it was in the 1st trimester because I was so darn hungry, but then it slowed down. I was slightly underweight before so I'm not too worried, but I'm going to watch and make sure I don't gain more than 30 pounds! Don't worry now...just see how it goes, and if you keep gaining rapidly, then I'd slow down on the eating!

With DD 1 I gained loads in 1st and 2nd Trimesters and nothing in the 3rd - total of 3 stones and 10 pounds.

The same is happening this time round too.

I'm not eating more food, but I'm overweight to begin with and gain very easily.

I really wouldn't worry about it.

Thanks ladies. I wouldn't say I have been overeating but haven't been watching what I eat which I would have always done before. Have also started eating breakfast (just toast) which I didnt before I got pregnant, because I thought I might pass out if I didn't.
I also haven't really been doing any exercise because at the moment I am puffed out just walking up a flight of stairs (something I will mention to the midwife).
I guess maybe I should probably still watch what I eat and try to do some exercise - which is hard when all I wanna do when I finish work is curl up on the sofa!

Think we're all so so different when it comes to this. I put on 13 pounds by 24 weeks and since then I've put on 1.5 stone. I'm 36+4 now and hoping I stop!!

Could it be water retention?

angelsw12 · 23/04/2010 18:20

Not sure, how can you tell?

I don't really know...

This from the internet:

Causes of body water retention depend on a wide range of factors including a high salt intake, as a reaction to hot weather, gravity, nutritional deficiencies, burns as well as sunburn and as a side effect of certain drugs. Pregnancy, oral contraceptives such as the pill, the menstrual cycle and menopause are also known causes of body water retention.

Thanks ladies, I think I will try not worry too much about it (heaven knows there are plenty of other things to be worrying about!) and just eat when I am hungry but just be a bit careful.
Still not sure about water retention but I may look into it a bit more - thanks for the advice. x
