Hi everyone. I know this is a slightly ridiculous complaint but anyway . . . I am only 16 weeks pregnant and went to get a few non underwired bras and was motified to discover that I have already gone from a 32D to a 32FF. It is already quite uncomfortable and I look totally out of proportion. I'm quite slim and no sign of bump yet so I just look like I have a couple of missiles pointing at everyone. I feel really self-conscious, especially at work! The woman in M & S said their sizes go up to a cup size K. I don't even want to think about that!! Any advice or estimates based on past experience as to how much more expansion I can expect??

Just wondering about buying nursing bras, how do you know what size to get as some people say that when your milk comes in you get even bigger (I shall be investing in a couple of hot air balloons at this rate).... any ideas as I was thinking of investing in a nursing bra before the baby arrives!!!

legallyblond · 29/04/2010 15:45

Wow - underwired bras are ok??!!! Yay!!

I have gone from 32B to 34E - I am 19 weeks... I went to John Lewis for refitting and to but a new bra last week (yes - I had squeezed myself somehow into my usual B cup bras until then - not a good look!) and they recommended non-wired. To be fair, the suuport is good in terms of how "high" my boobs are (seems norma;) and suddeny my boobs no longer hurt..... but I just hate the fact that they seem to point "outwards" now more and my nipples are on show! Anyone else have this?

legallyblond · 29/04/2010 15:48

Oh and Twittle, the John Lewis ladies said that I could go in anytime within the last month and they will be able to accurately fit me for nursing bras. You are only ENORMOUS apparently when the milk first comes in (engorgement, I think) for a couple of days (it happens 3 ish days after birth, so they told me..)

Can you tell its my first - clueless!

ellabella2 · 29/04/2010 17:15

Legallyblond I am totally with you on the 'pert but pointing out to the sides' boobs in a soft-cup bra. I was mortified when I tried one on the shape it gave me was just not flattering in anyway.

Here's to well fitting underwired bras all the way

Just to share, another lady here who was uncomfortably large of bosom to start with, and now seems to be a 36F at 28 weeks (and wondering where it will end....1st baby, so no past experience to go on) -

I've just bought some lovely bras from this place - www.nursingbra-shop.co.uk/ - after I saw someone recommend it on another thread. They do cheap-ish HotMilk bras (hate that name, but I do like the bras), and I ordered 4 which ALL fitted, incredibly -

but ellabella and anyone else struggling with the gruesome dinner lady bosom shape soft cup bras give you, then this - www.nursingbra-shop.co.uk/ShowDetails.asp?id=176 - the Bravado Black Cherry is a really nice fit/shape AND has patterned straps that I'm happy to have seen peek out under vest straps. Best one I've bought so far - doesn't look borderline surgical, like lots of large size bras do. AND seems to go up to an H/I cup, although I can't tell you how much I don't want to experience that.

I'm guessing I may have to move up a size again later, which is depressing and expensive, but I hate wearing 'udder' bras so much, I'm resigned to it if it means I get something comfy that doesn't frighten the horses.

MumNWLondon · 04/05/2010 19:36

MorrisZapp - after breastfeeding often they shrink back to smaller than you started with so don't book the reduction just yet.

MumNWLondon · 04/05/2010 19:41

also wanted to say, the "experts" at john lewis fitted me at 38 weeks with my first and I was unable to wear either of the (expensive) bras I bought - personally I'd recommend buying some sleep bras to wear for the first couple of weeks.... the problem was that they said my ribcage would immediately shrink down to its pre pregnancy size and it didn't, so I was left with 2 bras that just did not fit at all. if you do buy bras beforehand keep the receipts and if they feel uncomfortable when you try then on put them back in the packet.

cardamomginger · 04/05/2010 22:18

"gruesome dinner lady bosom shape" SPOT ON!!!

KristinaM · 04/05/2010 22:26

i was 32DD before i was pg

went up to 32G during pg and bf

back down to 32F now, 10 montsh after stopping bf, so dont think i will go any smaller

overall i am 1/2 stone heavier than before i was pg, and that seems mostly on the tummy

i woudl like to have smaller boobs as I'm out of proportion ( bust two inches bigger than hips) but i suspect they are here to stay now

edingirl100 · 05/05/2010 19:57

Thank goodness I found this post! I left Bravissimo in tears on Saturday when the measured me as a 32HH.....As I am small and have a short body, all the bras in this size ended up with the underwire practically in my arm pit. Had one like this on for 10 mins and it was rubbing me red. Left empty handed and they said that there was nothing that would fit me!! Tried 20+ bras on and nothing was comfy. Boo hoo....

barkfox · 05/05/2010 20:57

edingirl, same shape as me, then - I get 'underwire in the pits' problem, too.

That said, Bravissimo kept me going very nicely before I got pregnant and ridiculously top-heavy, I got lots of lovely bras from there. I haven't worn anything underwired for months now though - not because of any anxieties about milk ducts etc, I tend to think if it's comfy, then it can't be doing harm -

More that I'm lounging around so much, and trying to change position a lot etc when I'm on the sofa, and anything underwired digs in uncomfortably unless I'm sitting up nice and symmetrical.

If I end up living in my Bravado Black Cherry, that's fine (also got my beady eye on this one - same one in vanilla - www.nursingbra-shop.co.uk/ShowDetails.asp?id=174 )

If all else fails, and they get freak-show mahoosive, then I will be taming my boobs with this - www.nursingbra-shop.co.uk/ShowDetails.asp?id=118

It's basically a borderline surgical boob-hammock, but there's something cheerily defiant about it in leopard. Makes me laugh, anyway.

Hermya321 · 05/05/2010 21:02

Twittle You can get underwired nursing bras from Jojo Maman Bebe. Tis expensive, but I will be going down a similar route.

Twittle · 06/05/2010 11:36

Hermya321 thank you for the tip I shall go and have a look on their website, I just really really hope that my boobs get all sucked away through breast feeding (if I am able to do it) that would be great to be a good few sizes smaller than when I started off!!!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 06/05/2010 11:50

While you're pregnant you can just wear a normal underwired bra, but you MUST go to a reputable lingerie specialist NOT M&S to make sure it fits properly, as the breast tissue could be damaged if the wires dig in.
The best underwired nursing bras are by Anita, although again, they must fit properly.
It's not inevitable you'll get massive nork increase btw -- I went from a 32F to a 32G but back size has never increased through three pregnancies and 9 months plus of breastfeeding each time.

tartiflette · 06/05/2010 15:35

Can I ask about the sizing on those Bravado ones Barkfox?
They look really pretty but seem to 'cover' two sizes - not sure if I'm an E whether a D/E would be big enough or to chance a F/G...

barkfox · 06/05/2010 16:22

tartiflette, I ordered several 36F HotMilk bras at the same time as the Bravado Black Cherry, and went for a 36F/G, hoping it wouldn't be too big - and it was perfect fit.

It is made of slightly stretchy material, so I guess that's why they say it would also fit a G - I'll be interested to see if it does stretch 'with me' as they say it will. Not sure if that's much help for you, sorry!

(If I was you, I'd order both sizes and see which fits best, but then I spend half my life down the Post office returning mail order items, so I'm used to the faff of returns and refunds...).

slushy06 · 06/05/2010 16:52

I am sorry to say mine went from a Dcup to a Hcup and back down to a Fcup after feeding finished.
Second pg went up to Hcup and back down to a Gcup .
