I'm measuring 35 weeks and i'm currently 35 weeks pregnant. I just wondered what size my baby is likley to be when born at full term.

This is my second pregnancy but i was messuring small with my 1st and she was 6lbs 6

My DD was 7lbs 7 and she was bang on the 50% percentile for weight

bilandsildrivemecrazy · 21/04/2010 12:06

I think it's around 7 pounds - 7 pounds 4 maybe?

Assume it's different for boys and girls, do you know the sex?

Hevster · 21/04/2010 12:06

when i went to NCT classes last time they said the average was somewhere between 7.5 and 8lbs.

Eglu · 21/04/2010 12:07

I wouldn't say that your measurements being spot on would have anything to do with the size of your baby.

I believe the average size is something aroun 7lb 7oz. Not sure though. I'm sure somebody will come along who knows that answer though.

FWIW I was measuring small with DS1 and he was born a week early at 7lb 12oz.

I know people who measured big and have had 5lb babies.

MrsCraig87 · 21/04/2010 12:07

Yeh i'm having a boy x

I know 5lb 8oz and under is considered low birth weight but not sure of the average.

Mine were 6lb 3oz and 8lb, both full term. Quite a difference between them, almost 2lbs.

A doctor when I was having dd2 did ask why dd1 was so small.

Again · 21/04/2010 12:08

In Ireland the average birthweight is 7lb 6 oz, which I presume is similar to the UK.

LadyOfTheFlowers · 21/04/2010 12:12

I thought I heard somewhere recently the top end had gone up to 8lbs?

LadyOfTheFlowers · 21/04/2010 12:16

Would also agree the measurements don't seem to indicate size, for me anyway.

DS1 week early - 9 lb 9.5 - measured bang on
DS2 4 days late - 10lb 12.5 - measured 2/3 weeks ahead
DS3 - 8 lb 12.5 - measured bang on
DD1 - 8lb 14 - measured bang on

I was measuring spot on for dates, and had him on time, he was 7lb 7oz. Apparently exactly average for 40 wks?
This time, I said happiy to my sister, that I was measuring right again.
She burst my bubble, and told me that she was for both hers. She had two girls, weighing just over 9lb. So doubt it means anything?

heymango · 21/04/2010 20:42

I was measuring around 4 weeks behind my dates and baby was 9lbs 12!

However, I believe the average weight for a baby is 7lbs 7oz.

I've always been tiny and constantly got/are now getting comments on the size of my small bump. Also measured about a month behind with both my previous pregnancies (and currently at 26 weeks) but DD1 was 4 weeks early and 6lbs 4ozs so would have been quite heavy, and DD2 was a week early and 7lbs 6ozs.

Don't think bump size makes a huge difference, it's how your babies are lying, your stature, how your womb tilts etc which determines your size a lot

abride · 22/04/2010 15:03

My bump was small and neat with my son (so much so they thought I was small-for-dates and were quite worried). My son was just under 7lbs 5oz.

BorisTheBold · 22/04/2010 15:08

I don't think there's such a thing as an average size.

With DD1 I was told she would a big baby as I was measuring large for dates, she came out at over a week overdue (by my calcs and 3 days by theirs) and was 7lb 2.5oz.

DD2 was induced pretty much around her due date and I was reassured by the mw that she wasn't going to be big based on FM. She was 9lb 6.5oz.

Trust no-one

greensnail · 22/04/2010 15:09

My measurements were always bang for dates when pg with DD, she was 7lb9oz which was bang on the 50th centile for a girl born at 40 weeks - but she was born at 36 weeks!

Ivykaty44 · 22/04/2010 15:11

I asked my consultant how big the baby would be and he was half Oz out - he was delighted as he had never guessed that well before, he told me after!

ComeAgain · 22/04/2010 16:16

7lb 13oz for my DS born at 41wks. I have also heard 7lb 7oz is average at 40wks.

I measured right for dates throughout.

hophophippidtyhop · 22/04/2010 16:33

On my twenty week scan they plotted the measurements they had taken on a graph chart that had centile growth on it. Have a look and it should indicate roughly what kind of size - this baby is on the same growth area as my dd when she was born. It only has the 5th, 50th and 95th centile on it but should give you an idea of size.

Twowildboys · 22/04/2010 19:34

IME bump size has nothing to do with baby size. I measured more or less exactly the same with both my boys - slightly above 50th centile. DS 1 weighed 7 lb 9 oz and DS 2 a whopping 9 lb 9 oz! Noone saw it coming - mw was astounded, she'd guessed max 8 lb.

MrsCraig87 · 22/04/2010 20:01

Thanks for all your answers. I really doubt my bump size is anything to do with the size of my baby. I think he is going to be bigger around 9lbs. I know the bigger the healthier and stronger i'm just worrying about pushing him out. lol x

Mine always "measured" average for dates.

dd1 - 9lb 12oz 4 days early
ds - 9lb 3oz 10 days early
dd2 - 7lb 13oz 21 days early.

Don't believe what they say abotu measurements!

whatname · 22/04/2010 20:15

I was never given a measurement. Were you given estimates as a matter of course??
Every time I asked, they just said big! he was 9 15.

notcitrus · 22/04/2010 20:24

7 lb 8 oz, according to my centile chart and what the docs said when ds was born (exactly average weight but 97%ile for length - he didn't get longer for ages so by 3 mo was short!)

Midwives just told me I had a very average bump and would probably have an average-ish baby but that was very unpredictable.
