SPD - was diagnosed today

I've been diagnosed with SPD today, but hopefully it's not to serious (yet ha!)

I'm 18+3... when were you diagnosed, and what actions did you take to not be in too much discomfort?

I get pulling sensations when I stand up/sit down/roll in bed etc, as well as some when walking. It doesn't really help that I have a dodgy hip anyway, but that's another story!

Can I be active with this (go out every day, take DS to school, drive at least every other day) or will I be confined to house and school run (or walk) only?

Hi - so sorry you have been hit with SPD. I got it at 16 weeks this time (20 weeks last time) and so far have been able to keep mobile. Knackered by this time of the night though!
It is definitely worse this time and looking after a toddler I am sure is just compounding it.
I just try to rest when I can, and not worry about the dishwasher needing emptying, or washing put away. I get DH to do everything when he is here - he knows from last time that it goes away pretty quickly after birth!
I work part time and negotiate buses with a buggy, and still driving too.
So only advice really is know your limits and stick to them - if you are having a bad day then take it easy - leave the driving and non-essential activity until you feel rested.
Hope that helps - lots of people on here have had it and there is a thread somewhere where everyone supports each other.
Good luck and knees together

I don't work now, due to on-going health problems with my hands, so that's one less thing to fret about.

DS is nearly 7, and he's been lovely. He helps me with loading the washing machine etc, so that's not really a major concern.

I suppose I should learn to say no, when I get asked to help here there and everywhere (shoots self in the foot, as taking nephew to nursery tomorrow... oh well.)

On the whole, DH is quite supportive, but this is the first day I've had it, and already, I've cooked tea, fed the dogs, put 2 loads of washing on, helped DS with homework etc, that was after a day out helping a friend. Oh dear oh dear!! I just get fed up waiting for things to be done around here...

You will have to take a deep breath, close your eyes to the chaos around you and put your feet up! And very quickly learn to say no!

notnowbernard · 19/04/2010 21:03

What IS SPD exactly?

Mw told me I might be getting it today when I described how I felt (am 25w, never had it in prev 2 pgs)

butterscotch · 19/04/2010 21:08

The SPD Sofa Support thread is further down in pregnancy!

The tips I've been given by the wise mn's so far:-

Satin Jammies make turning in bed easier..
Getting in and out of bed/car do legs together.
REST
REST
REST
REST

I now wear a pedimeter to see how much walking I've done to keep me in check generally I'm finding if I keep to under 4,000 steps its not so bad, on the days it is over tend to be worse, later in the day being the worst time!

I have a toddler as well who doesn't nap and is very active, normally I'd be trying to wear her out but we've done loads of play centre (its one that has toys rather than one I have to climb in and help with) for 3hrs at a time I sit and drink coffee while she plays happily!

Swimming where she is active in the pool (baby pool) I sit and watch from poolside this lasts at least an hour and she is knackered after!

The game where I tell her to do something like sit down/lay down/turn around/do a rolly polly etc...I can do this from the sofa!

Painting/playdoiugh/cooking all from dining room table with little standing/walking effort.

Stories in bed during the day! She can last a good 30mins with this.

Watching fave films (my least fave as I hate her watching the TV) curious george, grease, alvin and the sodding chipmunks!

Doing puzzles though this usually is on the floor so can be a mission getting up!

Some days are better than others I defo feel it if I've over done it whilst today I've only done about 3,000 steps I've been in and out of the car loads so I'm feeling it more now1

Did you your doctor/mw give you pain relief? Paracetamol didn't touch mine but co-drydamol (SP) does help I try to only take one at a time during the day but take two at night and that helps.

Its crap this is my second pregnanyc and I didn't get this last pregnancy1 This is defo last pregnancy for me!

Good luck x

notnow, have a look here for a reasonable explanation about it (I googled it, and this was the first one to pop up

butterscotch thank you x I'm the same, didn't get this the first time round (just was very, very sick in my 2nd and 3rd trimester )

Er, well, resting is going to be the fun part...! I do have a pedometer somewhere, so I'll dig that out.

I have busy fits, and quite long stretches where I don't do much. The busy fits (funnily enough!) coincide when DS gets up, taking him to school, picking him up, DH gets home etc etc.

When it's me on my own, I am so very lazy. Having my family around me is what drives me.

Ok, I'll have a serious chat with DH with regards to resting more in the evenings especially - I do generally just potter in the day, it's just mornings and evenings which are manic. Oh, and weekends...

xx

Thanks, Park

Reading your link, not sure that's what I have...

No pain in the pubic or groin area

But do get a sensation like cramp or pulling a muscle sometimes when doing things like getting up from chair or floor, in and out of car and turning over in bed

parkj83 · 19/04/2010 21:45

PS, I haven't been prescribed anything, just been told to advise my mw, and if it gets worse, I'll be put in for physio

I haven't resorted to paracetamol or anything (yet...) but I find on the whole, my threshold is quite high. I can manage during the day, it's the night time I find hardest, as my hip plays up the most then, and rolling over in bed becomes a both a workout, and a work of art. (grab onto the rails at the head of the bed, support weight, inch onto good hip, roll on to belly, roll onto bad hip, keep weight on front half of that side, let go the rail )

Once I'm settled (on that hip ) the rest of the night is a breeze, so haven't quite figured that out yet. It's just for the first hour or so when I go to bed.

I spoke to the doctor in the early stages of pg, but my hip has plagued me for months before I was even pg. She basically said she couldn't do anything, as she'd prescribe drugs, but can't have them as pg

Chiro helped for a bit, but he's a bit hesitant with his treatment, now I'm pg.

New mattress is on the horizon, methinks...

notnow, is that across your tummy, rather than between the legs?

I get that sometimes, if I move too quickly, more often when I get up from the sofa, but put it down to the ligaments stretching across my belly rather than SPD, as I only get it occasionally. The pulling through my groin I get all the time, every time I move.

KatnKankles · 19/04/2010 22:02

I'm almost 37 weeks with my 4th and have had it since about 32 weeks. It started pretty mild and is getting worse quickly.... I struggle to do the school run as although it's not far it's up a steep bank and it really hurts. Luckily a friend is doing it for me as we live on her way anyway.

I find the more I walk around the more I either get used to it or it feels better but that's very bad as I feel a million times worse later if I overdo it so I have to basically sit on my arse most of the time!!

I dread getting out of bed some mornings... the physical act rather than actually being awake!

I know mine is actually quite mild compared to some... it can be impossible to walk, I'm still managing for now.

You should be referred for physio which will help.

LooL00 · 20/04/2010 09:16

Sorry to hear you've got SPD parkj83, you should get referred to the physio as soon as poss as it may help.Mine gave me a belt to wear (helps but I can't sit down in it) and tried to straighten my pelvis(helped for a bit but she's been on holiday and I haven't had an appt for a month) and gave me pelvic floor exercises to do on a gym ball(really help). None of this has cured it but I am managing to avoid pain killers by doing the exercises and resting a lot. I don't walk anywhere but I think I have it quite badly this time . My latest discovery is that all under bump maternity clothes seem to irritate my pubic bone so I'm into leggings and long tops. Come and join us on the SPD sofa thread, it's somewhere further down on pregnancy and has lots of tips for comfort.

LondonLlama · 20/04/2010 10:09

Just a quick tip from my physio, parkj83 (in addition to the really good recommendations above).

Whenever I stand up from a chair/sofa, or lift one leg at a time(for instance, to put on my knickers...although sometimes just sitting on the bed to do it is best!) he suggested I engage my pelvic floor muscles, clench my butt muscles, AND try to engage my abs all at the same time before lifting the leg. This stabilises the whole are around the pelvis and hugely reduces the discomfort. Plus, I suppose, it gives you a little pelvic floor/butt workout - never a bad thing. It sounds like a mission, but you get into it pretty quickly when you feel how much better it is.

Also, I get a lot of pain at night after getting into bed, so I lie on my side, pop a cushion between my knees and do some pelvic floor exercises (holding for 10 sec each time) - this seems to help it ease up.

I have found this really useful, along with my super-sexy Thuasne pelvic brace - grrr ;)

notnowbernard · 20/04/2010 12:45

Oh, you poor loves!

Having lookedinto this and reading the last few posts, I think it's safe to say I DO NOT have SPD

Pain definitely in the groin area

Sounds more like your description, Park... more like ligaments across the whole of bottom of bump stretching and pulling. Bloody painful if I forget and stand up or turn too quickly but nothing likw what you ladies are describing

I really hope things improve for you all and bring on the births!

Good luck to all

parkj83 · 20/04/2010 13:48

Wow, thank you ladies for your suggestions xx

LooL00, I've been in leggings for a good 3 or 4 weeks now, my under-bump jeans are very redundant now!

I'll phone the midwife and see what I can do for physio - I see a physio tomorrow for my hands, so maybe she'll help me with the spd too. (probably not though!)
