Daughter with possible slapped cheek syndrome?

Today my 2.50yo daughter has developed a red rash over her face that looks a bit like slapped cheek syndrome, she also has a runny nose that has been here for a while. I am 11 weeks pregnant and am not sure if I've ever had it before (though I guess I could ask my mum). Do I need to do anything? Go to see the GP? Has anyone got any experience of a child having this during your pregnancy?

Hi,

I never had it in pregnancy but i worked in a nursery when i was pregnant with DC2 and was told very clearly to keep a distance if any child had that. luckily they didnt.

My nephew had it a little while back and neither of us caught it, but my mum said none of us have had it!!

I think pop down to the gp ,make sure it is ok maybe they can gove you something to prevent it.

I got sent home from work (I'm a teacher) when we had an epidemic. I got a blood test at GPs to check immunity and all was fine. Probably best to give the doctor a ring to put your mind at rest.

I'm 12 weeks and been exposed to someone with slapped cheek and had to go and have a blood test. Have a look at the NHS guidance, there is a small risk to pregnant women. They check you first for long term antibodies at a first blood test, about 60% of the population is immune. If you turn out not to be immune you have to go back for a second test in two weeks to test whether you've been exposed to it recently. If you have you will get extra scans to monitor the baby. Sorry to scare you, I only know as I'm at stage one blood test at the moment. If you're not sure whether your daughter has it, it's worth checking with a GP - the next stage is a rash on the body with a sort of lacy looking edge. Hope all goes well.

I had this at 5 weeks pregnant. I had a blood test that conifrmed I had been exposed to it in recent weeks. I am now 13 weeks and have had no adverse effects. The consultant I saw after the scan said that it would have caused miscarriage at that early stage or there would be no ill effects. I think at 11 weeks you will need to have the blood tesst and if u have had it recently they will scan more regularly as it can cause anemia in the baby.
Hope this is of some help

See your GP to arrange a blood test asap. I was exposed via my first son at 20 weeks in my second pregnancy. It turned out I was not immune and also had a full blown outbreak myself. Though it was at the end of the riskiest period, up to 20 weeks, I still had to have 5 fortnightly scans to check the baby's development. We were both fine but it can be a worrying time as there can be some very rare but extremely serious complications. The Health Protection Agency website has some very informative pages, I'd recommend having a look there too. Search mumsnet for my name and parvovirus and you'll se lots of advice posts I've done on this before.

Let us know how you get on x

I was paranoid that I would get it when pregnant with dd2 (she'd taken a while and I'd had a m/c along the way so was pretty paranoid about everything !) and so asked at my booking appt for a blood test to check whether I'd had it. My Mum swore blind I hadn't - but I was immune so must have done. My mum had never even heard of it so suspect it was either known as something else or not much known about when we were children. I think the statistics suggest most adults are immune, but get checked out just in case.

libelulle · 20/04/2010 13:10

I'm 17 weeks and have been exposed; just found out earlier this week that I'm not immune . I'm absolutely terrified even though absolute risk is probably low. Mostly there's nothing that can be done, I think - it causes miscarriage in about 10% of pregnant woman who catch the virus before 20 weeks. But worth having blood test to check immunity as in some cases they can pick up on problems (if baby has anaemia) and do something about them.

Thanks for all your responses. Have just been to see GP who had to google when the dangerous period for pregnant women is !!! He wasn't even sure that my DD has it but did send me for a blood test just in case. I should get the results back in 2-3 days. [anxious face]
