My very good friend had a section middle of November. She wants to ttc again soon as she is heading for 40 but Dr told her she must wait for at least a year before trying again.
Has anyone done it sooner and have you had problems if you did? thanks

I had an emergency section and the consultant said it wouldn't be ideal if I was pregnant when he was redoing the scar at 15 months. It took another 2-4 months so was okay but I had baby number 3 four years and 3 months after the first and did have problems.

My sister has 4 dc, all born by c-section.

She has a 13 month age gap between dc2 and dc3 - not planned though.

She had no problems on that section but major issues on the 4th resulting in her having her womb removed.

was it actually the surgeon who told her to wait a year? It depends on your own internal scarring and healing so her own surgeon would be the only one who can advise really, her Dr wouldn't know neccessarily.

When I had my daughter who's now nearly 6 they used to say to wait a year. When I had my next one (15 months ago) the advice had changed to 6 months. I got pregnant again after about 8 months and havent had any problems.

When I was on the operating table, my surgeon actually said to me 'see you here again in a year' as in, actually on the table delivering my next one in a year, so he obviously didn't think even a 6 month wait would be neccessary!

I had ds1 by em section and then got pregnant with ds2 4 months later. Not ideal, especially as part of the placenta attached to the scar tissue from my section (because it was so fresh). Having said that it was all fine in the end. I had ds2 vaginally (better positioning, smaller baby).

I think it would be a good idea to wait a bit longer than I did - I was so exhausted and didn't give myself a chance to recover from ds1's (terrifying) birth. It's a mental health thing too imvho.

I do know someone who had a section in the march, 2nd the following april and 3rd the following august (3 under 3!!!!!!) and although has a very unflattering "apron" has so far had no long term effects of the c secs, but none were emcs they were all elcs after 1st breach - think if you go v quickly after they recommend having a section as opposed to a vbac.

My friend had an EMCS in september, and is now 12w pg with no. 2. She'll have a planned section this time as a VBAC would be far too risky, but don't think there's been any probs otherwise!

Totallyfloaty35 · 19/04/2010 20:44

Thanks for all the replies,i think she would like a VBAC next time, so should i suggest she hangs on a few more months?

My GP told me it was sensible to wait for 6 months, although if there was an unexpected pregnancy sooner than that then it wouldn't be a medical disaster.

I waited 13 months and had a straight forward planned cs 22 months after ds was born.

I got (deliberately!) pg 9 months after emergency c-section. I was told by my midwife that she had been advised to wait a year but hadn't practiced what she preached as she had deliberately got pregnant at 9 months, and that 9 months is fine. She had a VBAC with her second, no problems I don't think.
I am still 5.5 months pg with my second so can't guarantee will be problem free, but no worries have been raised about the shortish gap as yet.
A girl on my postnatal thread had an elective c-s and was told that 6 months was fine, and that 3 months was not ideal but not a disaster either.
Oh and I think I will be having a VBAC attempt, not decided yet though. It was assumed by my midwife that I would be and that the hospital would push me down this route, though I haven't been to talk to them yet.

The smallest gap between my c-sections is just under a year (between DS2 and 3). Though after my 3rd section my Dr did say that it would be best if I either didn't have anymore children or waited at least a couple of years to let everything heal. (though I did fall pg when my DS3 was 3 months and my Dr was okay with it, just would have preferred me to wait. Lost the baby at 14w and sometimes wonder if I was pg again too quickly after my DS3).

Hello! Had to join tMumsnet to reply to this. My 4 year old was born in november by emergency c-section no one told me anything about how long to wait. I got pregnant 9 months later and had a elective c-section at 38 weeks 9 months later with my second boy. Pregnant with my 3rd boy 2years 3 month after my 2nd c-section. I am now 30 weeks pregnant (with 3rd) and due near enough 3 years after my last c-section. I was even considering v-bac concultant didnt really recommend it but said i'd be monitered and everything is your choice. Im going for another c-section with having the other boys. All my c-sections have been fine and the next day after my 2nd section i was up and about and doctors and midwifes have no issues about me having a 3rd. Every case is different I think just depends on how well you heal and how lucky you are x
