I am currently 32+1, first pregnancy. I went for a routine midwife appointment last Thursday and took a urine sample as usual, which they tested there and then with a strip and said was fine. I also had a blood test for iron as last time they said I needed to take supplements.

Just now I've had a call from the GP surgery (where I usually attend to see the midwife) saying that the doctor has requested I drop a urine sample in???? What could this be for? I should have asked but it was the receptionist so suppose she may not have known. Am very anxious now as pregnancy has been straightforward so far and am hoping for a home birth... Help!

maybe you have an infection?

probably nothing serious at all but infections are very common in pregnancy

if left untreated they can sometimes cause problems, so they may want to double check if you need antibiotics they can get them prescribed ASAP

I've had one water infection just before Christmas - hope that is all it is?? I don't have any pain or anything.

i had about 3 or 4 infections often without any pain

sounds like your doctor is being very cautious

Hi!

Just phone them and ask why and what they are testing for. Remember (and remind them if nesscary) that they need to inform you of what they are testing for and gain your consent.

If you are worried about home birth being taken away, you can have one with or without your doctors ot midwives consent!

Good Luck
I'm sure its all ok, enjoy the rest of your childfree time

Normally they check for sugar in urine to see if you are at risk of gestional diabetes, should be routine check. Everything just becomes a bigger risk as your pregnancy advances so have to do more checks I would expect.

Well it's curiouser and curiouser... I dropped off the sample yesterday and heard nothing, so just called the surgery and they said the results are back and I need to give ANOTHER sample in... I asked why and what they are testing for as I have had no information and the receptionist said she didn't know as she is not medically trained and all she could do was book a telephone consultation with the doctor for FRIDAY for him to tell me.

Not happy at all. I have no idea what to do now. Suppose I will try and leave work early and call into the surgery on my way home to find out what's going on. I am a nervous wreck now. Is it unreasonable to expect that I should get some sort of explanation before being asked to drop off multiple vials of bodily fluids???

That is ridiculous! Them, I mean, not you!
If you can get into the surgery in person, I would just refuse to leave until someone explains to you what's going on.

Book the telephone consult and don't give any samples till then. How odd!
