Hoping hoping hoping my DH's blood test comes back as negative too but if not I have to get the anti d jab next Friday.

I've read it is painful, will site of the jab makes any difference? I am a complete wimp! They are taking my blood on same day for 28 weeks test so I'll be proud if I get out without fainting or crying!!

Any advice appreciated ladies.

The manufacturers state it should be given in your arm and the key is for it to be given slowley (as it is a thickish liquid) so ask the midwife to give it slowly to you. That way it has a chance to absorb whist it is being given rather than ramming the whole lot in a few seconds!

cinnamongreyhound · 15/04/2010 20:56

I had one in my arm at 28 weeks which was quite painful. But in the grand scheme of things not really that bad, sore arm for a day or so. She did ram it in though so could be better if you follow whostolemyname's advice!

Had the second one in my thigh about 12 hours after birth and hardly felt it but could have been drugs!

I was told by my midwife this time that they no longer give in thigh and bum due to obesity issues as it needs to get into muscle annd there's more chance of it going into fat in leg or bum.

I had it with DS and will be having another in 2 weeks... It wasn't too bad to be honest... I don't remember any bruising at all, I'm sure you'll be grand.

Don't watch the needle going in...

supergreenuk · 15/04/2010 21:07

I had it twice in my arm. There was no suggestion of other locations. It was a bit uncomfortable but it didn't last. No problems.

diznom · 15/04/2010 22:07

I had it in my bum a week ago, midwife said it would be less painful after as its the biggest muscle. Had no pain at all since and it wasn't too bad at time.

tasmaniandevilchaser · 15/04/2010 22:13

I had mine in my bum, think it probably did hurt, but it's over quickly - it can't have been that bad if I don't remember it all that well. Really you'll be fine. And the one after the birth....I didn't notice having it, just heard them say they'd done it, so have absolutely no idea where it went!

VeronicaCake · 15/04/2010 22:36

I've had three in my arm now. It stings a tiny bit as it goes in, but that is all. It definitely didn't hurt afterwards and there was no bruising. MW was gentle and took it slow each time because I was nervous.

So long as they administer it carefully and you take time to take some deep breaths if you feel nervous it should be fine.

electra · 15/04/2010 22:38

Definitely bum - my arms are thin! It didn't hurt when I had it there.

imamissandamummy · 15/04/2010 22:48

mine was in my arm and didnt hurt, although i too had scared myself reading stories on the net!
i regard it as a bit of a turning point in my pregnancy, i went alone (as i did with everything! :s ) and ended up waiting for ages in a place i wasnt sure was right... then a matron-ly nurse addressed me by full name and led me to a room where she asked me to sit on the bed... she then disappeared for about 10 mins without a word... while i was waiting my bump gave me a big kick and it was kinda like a "we're in this together mum..." and i was chuckling when the nurse returned and jabbed me!

dont worry about it. as with all jabs, its best to relax, as to be scared makes you tense and to be tense makes it harder for the needle to go in!

I have had it in both and it hurts significantly less in the bum. I found it painful in the arm but could hardly feel it in the bum.

Vistana · 15/04/2010 23:05

Hi!
Get your doctor to precribe you a numbing cream you apply an hour or two before over the sites for an injection or blood test.
Just ask the nurse or doctor to show you where to apply. If you are nervous you may as well just deal with the nerves not the fear of pain as well as the cream anthesties the skin so you don't feel it. Sorry can't remember the name of it but if you explain it to your doctor they'll know. Or maybe someone else here will know the name of it!

MumNWLondon · 15/04/2010 23:07

i had in bum both times, and hardly hurt. after birth i will have the G&A on hand of course!

gaelicsheep · 15/04/2010 23:15

I had mine in the hip but I can't see it would matter really from a pain point of view. It hurt a fair bit, but it's only for a few seconds. Makes you wince a little but that's all. There's no lasting discomfort.

It really is nothing compared with labour...

HKmama · 15/04/2010 23:21

I had it at the top of my bottom - somewhere below my muffin top where there's plenty of fat! The nurse recommended doing it there and said it would be much less painful. I didn't find it that bad at all and I am pretty squeamish about injections.

flexab23 · 18/04/2010 20:01

Thanks everyone. Guess my midwife will have deciding vote. If not I'll request a slow jab in the bum, lovely. Of course my DH is positive so there is no getting out of it now!

Gaelicsheep la la la I can't hear you!!!

bubbles12 · 19/04/2010 08:13

Had mine in my arm and it isn't too bad at all. No lasting effects whatsoever.
Good luck - hope all goes well for you.

shushpenfold · 19/04/2010 08:18
