Hold my hand whilst I fret

Am 36weeks+1. Everything has been fine up till now, but MW found lots of sugar in my urine yesterday (there hasn't even been a trace to date), packed me off for a blood test this morning (I have invisible veins) and said once we get the results from that back we can decide if I need a GTT.

I'd be quite philosophical about all this only DH is currently in the US, and due to fly back tomorrow. The airline is saying he could be delayed by days because of the huge backlog of passengers they need to transport. Mum is staying right now but she needs to get back to work tomorrow. I'm sure I can find a friend locally to come with me to hospital if I do need a GTT. But fretting about DH getting home multiplied by fretting about possible GD means I'm losing all sense of proportion.

So please tell me reassuring things about finding high levels of sugar in your urine at 36 weeks, or how GD really isn't that bad so I can at least get that worry into perspective.

Sorry I don't know the answers but bumping this for you and hoping someone else will be along soon...

I had sugar in my urine all the time I was pg, ranging from small to huge amounts. Normal GTT though.

My friend who works in a hospital lab doing blood and urine tests asked the consultant there about it for me, and she said that glucose in urine really means very little in pg, it's just one of the ways your body gets rid of glucose, and your kidney function is altered in pg, making it much more likely to happen.

So, don't stress. And even if it is gd, developing it this late is unlikely to have much effect on your baby either

I had sugar in my urine and bought some dipsticks to test myself - I found if I ate a lot of food before testing then I had sugar in my urine. Was it your first wee of the day, or had you eaten in the hours before it?

I then had the GTT and it was ok actually - I took a book with me and it was quite nice to have a few hours to read quietly!

It must be horrible having your DH away, but he will get back, within three days I reckon - hopefully the ash and stuff will have blown away by then.

You'll be fine, honest - it is hard, though. Is there anyway you could go and stay with your mum after the tests?

Thanks all. I'm trying to keep a sensible perspective on it. Have had a look at some stuff online about GD and the worst case scenario is induction/c-section at 38 weeks if they are concerned about a big baby. Which I guess I can live with.

It is just the uncertainty which is unsettling. Family are a bit too far away to go and stay with at this stage (about four hours drive), but I do have friends and lovely neighbours to hold my hand over the weekend, so I won't be fretting by myself.

Please keep you fingers crossed that flights resume soon and my blood sugar is normal.

Cheers m'dears.
