iCandy Apple/Cherry

Hi,

This is my first post on any pregnancy website! I am 14 weeks pregnant due on October 14th!
Yesterday we went to John Lewis to buy a camera and decided to have a look round the nursery department!!! So much fun but probably a little premature!! We looked at the buggies and really like the iCandy Apple and Cherry designs. I have looked online at reviews, some of the older reviews aren't that great but one mentioned that they had changed the chassis recently. Does anyone know if this is true and maybe has a more up to date review?
We particularly liked the Apple but have read that this is quite bulky and very heavy (though looking at the weight online it doesn't seem heavier than other buggies)People also complained about how big it is to fit in the boot of the car. Do you think a shop would let us try and put it in our car beforewe buy? We don't think that we would convert it to a pear for a tandem buggy so maybe because of this the cherry is more suitable?

Sorry for all the questions!

Thanks in advance!

Firstly congratulations! And well done on biting the bullet and posting

I have an Apple and I really really loved it. It looks big but it really isn't any bigger than most others as you say. And it is lovely to steer, not heavy at all. I had an old style Focus at the time and there was bags of room for the pushchair and whatever other rubbish I had in the boot! The extendable handle is really useful (the Cherry doesn't have this). The carrycot/seat/car seat are nice and high up as opposed to the Bugaboo where the carrycot is down by your knees! It's also very very very easy to turn to seat unit around and I have done this many times with DD in situ. Folding takes a bit of practise but is dead easy once you get the hang of it and it folds with the seat attached.

Just to add, my Apple is probably one of the earlier models as DD is 2.3 years old now and I loved it. They can only have improved in that time. I would buy it again if I had my time over.

Having said all that, the Cherry has most of the above and is that bit lighter...

Enjoy the shopping, it's such a fun part of all this

Thankyou so much for your reply!

My sister has a bugaboo Chameleon, and while I do like it I could never afford to spend that much on a pram (her mother-in-law bought it for her!) and I have always felt that the carrycot is very low down on them!
Some of the problems people seemed to encounter with the Apple were that the wheels would lock as they were going along and having it as a 3-wheeler was apparently very wobbly and actually fell over. Also that the rain hood ripped easily. I presume you didn't find that any of that was a problem?

Hi, I had a cherry and loved it. I had one of the first ones in the UK and I had some problems, namely wheels sticking and the seat would sometimes not recline and got stuck. Both issues were fixed without a quibble and I was then given a new chassis as they said they had brought out a new one after complaints. I had no issues after that. The cherry was easy to push, big shopping area, nice position for LO (in pram top and seat) - all in all just really happy with it. A friend has the apple and she just has a clio so I dont think it can be that big folded?

Rockbird · 15/04/2010 13:19

When I got mine it came with both lots of wheels so you could choose 3 or 4 wheels and I have to say I only ever used it with 4. I would imagine that it would be less steady with 3 wheels to be honest. Wheels never locked though. I didn't have any problems with the rain hood at all.

Can't help have never had either of those. However mothercare will let you try it in your boot before you buy x

Rockbird · 15/04/2010 13:32

Mothercare don't sell them. John Lewis do, as you know, but other than that it's independent retailers.

nunnie · 15/04/2010 13:34

Sorry meant as standard mothercare let people try pushchairs in their boot before they committ to buying.

Not sure about John Lewis do that.

NoTeaForMe · 15/04/2010 14:29

Thankyou for all your replies.

I think one of the iCandys is definitely for us! We will obviously keep researching but it's definitely our favourite at the moment! But we have a long time to go!! Which prams did you go for in the end?
I am due in October so am looking really early! When would you all suggest we actually start buying the big things like the pram and cot.

Thanks for all your help, can't wait to start buying things!!

I've been having this pram debate also but am now more or less decided on the iCandy Peach as it converts to a double if we decide we want another one soon! I have been swaying back and to between that and the bugaboo chameleon. Did you look at the peach also?

NoTeaForMe · 15/04/2010 14:44

We did look at the peach, but the carrycot and seat both looked quite small to us. Also I preferred the brushed aluminium of the Apple and Cherry compared to the shiny Peach! Don't know if you know but the Apple converts to the Pear which is a double the same as the Peach blossom.

I would ahve loved a pram, pram, as we live in the sticks, needed something sturdy with big wheels for when we went walking with the dogs, that wasn't too expensive if needed replacing, also needed something that would fit easily in the car as there are no local shops in walking distance so everything meant driving. We got the chicco multiway and it was perfect for us.

The chicco lasted 2 years, then we put it in the garage and well it's seen better days now a bit mouldy. Think we will just get another one of these nearer the time.

With my dd I was 35 weeks pregnant when we got the pushchair, this time I will keep my eyes open for when I see the best offer I think as I know what I want.

Hope that helps.

Rockbird · 15/04/2010 14:57

Sorry nunnie, that sounded a bit pompous

I ordered mine at 23 weeks because I was told there was a bit of a delay on them and we had to pester a bit but we got it in good time. In fact I was wheeling it round the front room when we got it, with a rolled up towel as a 'baby' when we got a phone call to say why weren't we at a family Christening? You can tell how excited we were about the pram!

nunnie · 15/04/2010 14:59

What did?

Rockbird · 15/04/2010 15:02

Saying they don't sell them in Mothercare, sounded a bit know-allish (am I being over sensitive here? )

nunnie · 15/04/2010 15:06

Not pompous at all, over sensitive maybe but it is allowed in pregnancy I think it is a rule in fact

Hevster · 15/04/2010 17:19

we have a Phil & Ted and it's brilliant, it converts to a double (very hand as no 2 due Oct) goes accross the horse's field, the beach and pushes along pavements remarkably easily with 2 2 year olds in it. Just fits in the boot of Ford Focus and def worth a look if you do any terraine other than concrete. - thats my bit for what it's worth!

cinnamon81 · 15/04/2010 17:41

I bought an Icandy cherry in Feb last year, it was definitely one of the newer models and I had a nightmare time with wheels falling off three times despite having the chassis replaced twice. I wouldn't recommend it. The shop finally refunded my money after threatening legal action as they insisted they only had to replace it, i was so peeved at being stuck with a pram that i knew would fall apart when using, but was too skint to buy another until i got some money back.

Can you imagine the nightmare walking home from the shops/park getting yourself, a baby and a pram with missing or stuck wheels home, or worse, crossing a busy road when a wheel falls off or jams and you end up stuck because your pram won't push!! Three times I ended up in nightmare situations like this. Aargh I feel annoyed just thinking about it!

NoTeaForMe · 15/04/2010 17:51

Oh no! Cinnamon81 thats terrible! Do you know for sure that it was one of the newer models? When did they bring them out? This is the kind of bad review I have heard. It is either similar stories to this one or people absolutely love them!
