Someone recommended a natural remedy on this thread for cystitis - had a weird name that I can't remember now at all? Can anyone help or make alternative suggestions?

Not sure about the natural remedy but Cranberry juice and products are very good for keeping cystitis at bay.

Yes - it usually helps me but I'm glugging volumes of cranberry juice and snacking on 'craisins' at the moment - but still having burning feelings when I go to the loo. It's driving me nuts. I can't for the life of me remember what the natural product was called ... someone here swore by it on another thread.

After much googling, I found it: Waterfall D-Mannose!

im having my fourth water infection since i fell pregnant. im 18 weeks. they give me antibiotics and IT COMES BACK. no pain or burning, but it smells (sorry). and i hate cranberry juice. and the antibiotics give me a tendancy towards thrush. who knew pregnancy was so glam?

Hi Ladies,

Just a quick question, is you water infection something you are always prone to or just in pregnancy?

Because if just in pregnancy to be on the safe side maybe ask to be tested for GBS not to worry you at all, but my sis had this had this and no one warned her, her little bubba was so poorly and i will always warn mums to be to just have the test if you have urine infections.

She is pregnant with dc2 and again urine infections.

I'm prone to them all the time (not being pregnant) so i know how horrible they can be, i always think water with fresh lemon juic and loads of it works a treat :-)

no, just in pregnancy

What is GBS?

Group B Strep is a bacteria that lives in woman and sometimes causes no problems. But when pegnant it can be harmful to the baby once waters have gone.

I had never heard of it myself untill then, but apparently it is very common, midwifes do not make you aware of it for some reasson.

You can ask for a swab which they usualy do about 37ish weeks.

A/c to the Waterfall D Mannose website, cranberry juice can make things worse, which is my experience.

I had cystitis on and off for about 18 months. I had the hot line to the local emergency out of hours dr, who got to know me so well that they would fax a prescription to the local 24 hour pharmacy. I had tried every antibiotic known to man. Then I started taking the sugar pills, and I've had one episode in 2 or 3 years (involving, sadly, wandering through Venice in the pouring rain looking for drugs). I can't recommend it highly enough ...

Bearberry leaves (Uva Ursi) is another natural remedy. You can get it as tablets or as tea (infusion).
However, some places say it's contraindicated in pregnancy.

But maybe that's just being very cautious and at the end of the day it's less of a problem than antibiotics? Still, I would talk to a qualified person before taking it while pregnant.

Try cranberry tablets, they give a much more concentrated dose of the relevant chemical found in cranberries than the drinks or fresh ones, The only place I've ever been able to source them is Superdrug. I've been taking them preventatively this pregnancy and have not had cystitis this time round.

Interesting re the strep B comments above. I did the private swab test before my last pregnancy and it was positive so I had intravenous anti-biotics during the birth and my baby was thankfully fine (just had to stay in hospital for a day while DD was monitored). I think the proportion of carriers in the population is quite high, 50% perhaps, so it's a mystery why this is neither routinely tested for or particularly talked about by midwives.

I suffered persistent cystitis with DC1 pregnancy. I was in Spain during one of my attacks and got an over the counter remedy at the pharmacy that turned my pee orange but did the trick quicker and better than any anti-biotic (and it was perfectly safe in pregnancy). I think it was called Microdon, but it's a few years ago now so I could be wrong. Does make me mad that the only options on offer in the UK are anti-biotics you need to wait a week for until the tests come back or cranberries.
