I have this tomorrow, I have had it before a couple of years ago but cant remember the details. How long is it between the two tests?.
Do you have to stay in the hospital in between (or could I go have a look around the shopping centre next door!).

When I did it a couple of years ago, I had to fast overnight. Got to hopsital about 9 am, had blood test, had glucose drink, sat around and read a magazine for a couple of hours, had another blood test, THEN went shopping. I think you are meant to rest between the tests, so you don't raise your metabolism and burn up more glucose than you would normally or something.
HTH. Good luck.

It's 3 hours, and they like you to stay in so they can make sure you don't eat/drink anything other than that sickly orange stuff!

I guess you could always ask, you probably won't want to go scupper the test and they might let you escape for a bit.................

Its blood test, drink LOTS of horrid yucky stuff, wait 2hrs then blood test again.

I was surprised at how much of the horrid drink there was, I thought it would just be a small glass, it was 3 small glasses!

I was allowed to wander if I wanted, but not allowed to eat/drink anything in the 2hrs (having fasted fro 12 hrs before) so the canteen was out of bounds and the newsagents only occupied me for 10 minutes so take a book!

You turn up reasonably early (I did anyway), have a blood sample taken, drink a smallish bottle of Lucozade or similar, hang around for either one or two hours (think it's 2), have another blood test, then go home and eat like a horse (well I did, was starving after having to fast from midnight the night before).

I wasn't allowed to wander off or go shopping because they want to check your resting glucose levels, your blood sugar comes down if you exercise apparently.

I had to ring after 3 in the afternoon for my results.

ah well no shopping for me then! I will have to take a book or steal the ds (if I can remove it from my daughters hands!).

Yep all of the above. Fearing a dead faint by the time I was finished I took a tracker bar with me for straight afterwards. Bit into it, could feel myself stabilising and realised it had fecking nuts in it! Had to spit it out (pfb). But yes, fast overnight, about a litre of foul liquid, two hours in the waiting room with only water then more blood and home. Great fun...

MumNWLondon · 12/04/2010 21:51

they just told me not to eat or drink anything and come back in 2 hours and that i was to jump to front of the queue as needed to be done 2 hours late... i could have left hospital if i'd wanted to... take a book just in case.

I have mine on 10th May and in the letter I got it says nothing to eat from 9pm, appointment at 9am, blood test, drink, 2hr wait and then another blood test. I was planning to go off can't imagine sitting in the hospital for 2 hrs with a 3 year old, fingers crossed for same as MrsGeek!!! Read on another thread here to take a sandwich with you for straight after the test. Not looking forward to it as I feel very sick if I get hungry at the moment
