I'm pretty sure I can't because 3 years ago I had surgery on my nipples where, I think, but not definitely sure, that my milk ducts were severed. Just had a google now on the procedure I had and it seems to suggest this would have happened. BUT, for a few months I've had a yellowy (TMI) hard discharge on the surface of my nipples which I got checked out by the GP who said it's "a pregnancy thing". Well today I decided to squeeze my nipples (seriously TMI!!) to see if I could clear it and white liquidy stuff has oozed out. Am I getting my hopes up? I'm 35weeks, hospital bag is packed with bottles which I'd so so love to not have to use

HI that is def normal that your boobs have that, its your stuff that comes in before the milk i cant remember how to spell it now so i'll guess colostreum? lol.

mine did that from about 32 weeks its your body getting ready for the baby

ILikeToMoveItMoveIt · 12/04/2010 18:51

The yellow stuff is colostrum.

It all sounds like positive stuff to me. Good luck

Sounds sort of promising... is there any way your GP can consult notes / contact the surgeon who did the procedure 3 years back for clarification? Seems like the sort of thing that you ought to be able to find out.

My good friend had a breast reduction at 18, the operation involved fully removing the nipples and reattaching them after. She was able to fully bf and had no problems!

What kind of op did you have? (nosey face)

I would try and ask everyone! sounds very promising!

LaTrucha · 12/04/2010 19:27

As far as I know, it depends on the way the surgery was done. I'd second contacting your GP so that they can find out for you.

Ooo positive story! Thanks Rose. It wasn't a "boob job" per se, it was corrective surgery for inverted nipples. I'll discuss it with the consultant on Friday

If you use the "Advanced search" function at the top and search for "breast reduction" then select only the "breast and bottle feeding" topic then there are loads of old threads. Here are a few to start you off:

I know you said it wasn't a breast reduction but I don't think it's the type of surgery that matters, more whether the ducts were wholly severed or not. I think that it's possible they can grow back as well.

wow. How exciting. Good luck!!

Hi

I had a breast reduction about 8 years ago and had no idea whether I would be able to b/f. As soon as DS was born my milk started coming through. I would say if you have colostrum showing then it is a very good sign.

Now 36 weeks with DS2 and like you having leaky boobs!

Will say one thing, I had lots of problems with cracked nipples, may of been a coincidence but recommend you pack some lansinoh to take with you and use right from the start.

Good luck

There was a procedure on embarrassing bodies where a woman had her invertednipples corrected. The surgeon was very confident that she would be able to bf- his percentage was in the 90's.

I had a breast reduction 14 years ago,and was able to breast feed.

LittleDonkin · 13/04/2010 09:23

I was wondering the same on this topic as I am 14+5 with my first and I had one of my breasts reduced about 6 years ago so was unsure if I could breast feed but after reading this thread it seems I may well be able to. YAY!!!!!
