15 weeks pregnant. Too early to start buying things for baby?

I am 15 weeks pregnant and want to start purchasing baby stuff so that i don't have to buy it all in one go. Is it too early to buy things at this stage? Can anyone recommend what sort of items I could start purchasing now in time for baby.

I don't think it is too early but then dh surprised me by buying the car seat when I was 12 weeks .

I would start by making a list of what you would need.

We had a room full of

nappies
cotton wool
baby wipes
bedding
baby clothes
baby book
hair brush
top and tail bowl
nappy buckets
diary

We waited to buy the cot and the pram.

I think if you've had your first scan and everything was ok then it's fine to start buying stuff. In fact now is the perfect time because there are loads of NCT Nearly New sales on, and you'll pick up some real bargains!

I guess it depends on how large your house is, though. If you live in a rambling pile, then it won't matter if you've got the cot, pram, high chair etc in plenty of time. If your house is smaller, then maybe stick to buying clothes, toiletries, small bits of equipment, bedding etc as you find stuff you like, good deals etc.

Bear in mind that some of the larger pieces of equipment may take a few weeks to arrive, so it's good to plan early. Also if you're one of those people that thinks girls should have pink and boys should have blue, then wait until you find out at the 20 week scan, or at birth, to get the gender-specific items you need.

Search the archives of mumsnet too, there are lots of threads advising the best things to buy for your baby, and stuff that you won't need. That will save you money and space!

Oh, and congratulations!!

I don't think it's too early, I will be doing the same when I have had my 12 week scan. Just unisex baby grows and socks and items (best time cheap in winter sales!).
Nappies and bottles etc. Remember to buy tiny baby nappies 1 pack in case, I didn't and my little ones kept dropping off.

I bought my pram when i was 15 weeks pregnant with DC3 as it was a bargain too good to miss!

MrsC2010 · 11/04/2010 14:43

I think it's ok, depends how superstitious you are. We're not really, I just didn't want too much around just in case. I think when I got to your stage (am 24 wks now) I started buying toiletries and boring practical bits as and when I saw them. Started working through the list!

Once we had had the all clear at 20 wks we started buying clothes and stuff like that. Now the only major bits we have left to get are:
Mattress
Pram (chosen one)
Car seat (we might be borrowing but waiting to see)
Changing bag

So I've been quite busy! Still got money left in the pot, nursery etc to sort.

i started buying a few bits around 20 weeks as the after christmas sales were on so i picked up a few bargains. I wish i'd done/ got more around that time now as i'm now 35 weeks and still working full time and am just so tired for doing much now

Of course not!!!!

I love buying baby things
I have most things this time as its my second but I have bought a couple of unisex babygro's just to get started. I bought DS pushchair when I was 16 weeks last time, was M&P three wheeler for £16 as someone else said too good to miss. Still use it regularly

People will always tell you different things that they couldn't live without. My favourite things to buy were the bedroom bits, didn't get the cot til later but I knew what size we were getting so got bedding, curtains, night light and lampshade pretty early.

My little boy loved his bouncy chair from birth until he could sit, so I would say its an essential buy but I know others who don't like them. Have fun shopping.

I'm 14 weeks but totally paranoid and am not buying anything until at least July, maybe August. I am however, putting money aside each month so I have a lump sum to buy it with. But that's just me!

Emster30 · 11/04/2010 18:45

Not too early - I am 25 weeks and want to start buying sstuff but don't know where to start!

YorkshireTeaDrinker · 11/04/2010 19:50

I don't think its too early. I'm 10 weeks, and am just waiting for the first scan before I start shopping. If all's ok after that I'll be watching Ebay and picking up sale bargains whenever I spot them.

RnB · 11/04/2010 19:52

I'm 33 weeks and have hardly anything!

MumNWLondon · 11/04/2010 19:56

Up to you... I am 38 weeks and still nervous about buying stuff, although clearly by now need to. Because this is Dc3 have only bought stuff like nappies and other odds and ends. DC3 will be using DD's and DS's things eg cot, car seat, pram, baby bath, sling so clearly i need to buy less.

re: buying in one go, put money aside each month make a list, and then go to big mothercare/john lewis etc and buy the whole lot.

if you are looking out for ebay bargains though worth starting early.

i know a few people who have lost babies at various stages from 20-40 weeks so i guess thats the root of my nervousness.

first1 · 12/04/2010 08:36

I'm 35 weeks and whilst I've got most stuff and the nursery is decorated, cot put up etc, there's still stuff I have to buy. I'll worry until baby is in my arms. I've heard too many sad stories of things going wrong at all stages

gemcgem · 12/04/2010 09:12

hi! its never to early , an as others have said if you'v had you first scan then its fine to get the odd baby bits in , why not!? i bought my pram at 12 weeks with our first ,i was so excited after seeing him on the screen. but if you dont feel ready then don't !?
good luck

I had my first at age 20, the second 18 months later. I had my third at 28 and the fourth at 30.... Now at 37 I have been desperate to start trying for another baby, and as soon as my OH (other half) agreed to try, I started shopping for small things that I found on sale and used versions of things that you can (like a diaper bag and a few onesies). I say go for it if it's what you want to do, just don't go overboard.
