I'm nearly 37 weeks pregnant. I posted last night about swelling and itchiness. Basically, my hands and feet have been becoming more and more swollen for a few days, and no amount of resting them has made them go down.

I was going to wait until Monday when I can speak to my community midwife, but tonight they seemed to be getting worse, so I rang our out of hours service who sent me to a+e.

At a+e, I had my blood pressure taken by the triage person...it was 131/84 (high-ish for me, it never deviates from 100/60).

I was then sent to wait in another waiting room. Doctor came out, called my name. Instead of taking me to a consulting room, he spoke to me in the waiting room...asked me what i was worried about. I tried explaining to him. He looked at me like I was an idiot and said "swelling is normal in pregnancy. Itching is not related to pregnancy, are you allergic to anything?" I explained that I'm not, and have been tested for all sorts due to itching regularly before I was pregnant. He went on to ask if I've eaten sea food . I'm not allergic to seafood. He then said, "You do look a bit flushed, I'll get you some piriton." He went and fetched a box of antihistamines, and told me not to drink excessively.

Now, I don't mind being told if I'm being neurotic, but...
No one glanced at my green notes.
No one looked at my swollen ankles or hands.
I know from reading that itching can be very serious in pregnancy.
No one monitored my baby, or asked about kicks/movements etc.
No one did a urine sample.

I feel really stressed out now. I fully expected to be checked and told that there was nothing to worry about...but I wasn't checked. My midwife isn't around till Monday and I don't know what to do.

A&E are useless for pregnancy related issues. You should have called your labour ward after the girls here told you to, because PE can progress v quickly.

131/84 is high if you are a constant 100/60! That is a huge fluctuation. It is true that it is a concern when the lower figure is over 90 but you have had a considerable jump.

PE can occur in subsequent pregnancies even if you have never had any signs/symptoms before & with the same father. A friend had 4 children, same dad for all & only got PE in her 4th. She developed full blown eclampsia!

Please get some advise as soon as you can, from your labour ward.

How are you today abbierhodes

Hi, I am a GP and totally concur with above... The a&e doc was an idiot and wrong. I would strongly advise going to labour ward... They will check your urine, your bp a few times, check the baby, they'll know what they're talking about, your mind will be put at rest. You're most probably fine, but you do have some symptoms of preeclampsia and cholestasis, and they really should be checked. Don't let that stoopid doctor put you off making sure you and your little one are ok xxx

Allergies can develop & only occur during pregnacy too, I have things I only react to when pg.

How are you today?

Have you been?

I had OC with my 3rd and apparently its common to get it at around 37 weeks. (itchy hands and feet)

Hi ladies, quick update! I've been assessed by labour ward and all seems fine. My blood pressure seems to be coming back down. They are not worried about pre-eclampsia.

They have done blood tests for cholestasis (sp?) and I have to go back on Tuesday for the results and to have baby monitored again.

The midwives on labour ward were absolutely lovely! I called first thing this morning and just burst into tears an the phone. The lovely midwife told me to come straight in, and they were very thorough and reassuring. They basically agreed that the a+e doc was an idiot, though they weren't unproffesional enough to use the word idiot!!

Thank you all so much for your support!!

On the positive side...I think things may be progressing!!!!! I've had a bit of a 'leak'(...maybe a bit of a dodgy bladder,) I'm unsure at the mo, just watching and waiting. I'm 37 weeks tomorrow and both of my previous babies were born at 38 weeks, so wouldn't be surprised if things started soon! Fingers crossed that this is it, and I haven't just crossed the line into total incontinence!!!

That's good news. Glad all ok

I'm shocked, but not surprised by the response you received in A+E.

There is no requirement for A+E docs to do any training in obstetrics. He may have been quite junior and not realised that swelling and itching COULD be serious in pregnancy. Out of hours shouldn't have sent you to A+E, they too should have advised you to ring labour ward.

Fingers crossed the blood results are OK on Tuesday, but at least you're 37 weeks and nearly there!

great news - so glad you had a proper assessment finally as things can go wrong quickly with these things near the end - still can't believe the doctor wouldn't atleast have wanted to cover himsefl in case that turned out to be the case!
